We keep moving together, prolonging our pleasure. Every time one of us is about to shatter, the other stops moving. We make love for hours until we can’t take it anymore. Both of us shake and cling to one another as we come together.

Exhausted and soaked with sweat, I pull out of her, rolling over and wrapping her in my arms.

Her eyes are heavy, barely able to remain open.

But she forces them open, as she says, “This is where I’m meant to be—right here with you. You are home for me, Max. I love you with everything I am.”

Pulling her tighter against me, one of my hands pushes a lock of hair away from her face. “You’re my home, Irelynn. My destiny. My everything. I love you.”

We both exhale a long sigh, contentment steeling over us.

Closing our eyes, we finally fall asleep.

Chapter twenty-nine

Irelynn

October19,2018,9:30a.m.

For two days, all Max and I have done is bask in one another, which pretty much consists of having sex everywhere in our hotel room, sneaking quickies in the bathrooms of the hotel restaurant, showering daily, and eating.

Last night, he led me outside onto the balcony, and we danced beneath the stars. When he played “Love of a Lifetime” by Firehouse, I sobbed against his shoulder, pledging that I’ll only love him more and more each day for the rest of our lives.

When the dance was over, he carried me inside and alternated between fucking, and making love to me, in the huge tub.

We are certainly making up for lost time.

As we sit in the hotel lobby eating breakfast, it feels like a rock is sitting inside my stomach. I toy with my food, sighing heavily, as Max looks at me with concerned eyes, knowing what is bothering me without saying a word.

Moving my eggs around with my fork, my concerns start bubbling over, like champagne in a glass. “I just… I’m not sure how I’m going to feel, stepping back on campus. Even though I have so many good memories with you, my last one…” My voice trails off as I gaze with unseeing eyes out the window. Picking up my water glass, I take a drink. “Then I worry about Vanessa. I texted her last night while you were grabbing my coffee from the freezer. She hasn’t responded.” My shoulders sag as I meet his concerned blue eyes. “I’m worried I’ll see her on campus and she’ll look through me. I’d like to go over to my apartment to get some things, but I’m afraid...”

“Baby.” Max’s hand is on mine, rubbing reassuring circles on it. “First of all, as far as campus is concerned, we’ll take it slow. I’ll be there with you. Your parents are meeting us in…” He looks at his phone, then back to me. “Ten minutes. They can fill out the forms if you can’t. All you will need to do is sign it. I already checked while you were asleep.”

I give him a grateful smile, loving him even more. He’s always trying to make my life easier.

“As far as Vanessa, I’m convinced she’ll come around. She had a lot of family stuff to deal with while you were gone.” He strokes my hand reassuringly. “Don’t feel guilty about that, my love. Not your fault.” He smiles at me, but it doesn’t reach his eyes, which makes me feel uneasy. Leaning closer, he says, “Baby, what happened with William… well, it was just a casualty of his devotion to you. His unrequited love for you.” He looks around the room, then back to me. “And yet, you helped him see the error of his ways. Maybe that’s what bothers Vanessa.” He smiles at me, his eyes soft. “Maybe she can’t comprehend how you can understand his obsession, let alone forgive him for it?” He shrugs, bringing my hand to his mouth, kissing the back of it. “I also think Vanessa is struggling with the fact that every time she needs you, you’ve always been there. Except for the time while you were in captivity, though you can’t be blamed for that.”

I lean forward, releasing a sigh. “I’ve always been there for her. It makes me feel terrible that I wasn’t.”

“I know, love. I’ve watched you put her needs over your own. Look what happened the first weekend we met.” His grin changes, becoming broader, as his eyes sparkle. “Although I’m sure glad now. Spending all that time with you brought us here.”

I can feel my face glowing as I stare at him with sparkling eyes. “Totally agree.”

“My point is this is a huge adjustment for her. And combined with the other stuff going on in her life, she just may not be coping well. But that doesn’t mean she’s going to throw your friendship down the drain. Just be patient and give her some time.”

Nodding, I reach over, running my fingers through the scruff along his chin. “I will, sweetie. Thank you for listening and for the advice. Also, for caring so damn much.”

He kisses me softly. “I’m always here, my love. And as for caring so much… I couldn’t stop if I tried. Now you’re stuck with me.”

“Like glue?” I give him a teasing grin.

“Super glue.” He squeezes my hand, then nods to the door. “Your parents have arrived. Are you ready for this?”

My spine stiffens as resolution rolls through me. “As ready as I can be.” Pushing away from the table, I stand, holding Max’s hand.

My mom goes to Max, hugging him, while my dad hurries to me. “Hey kitten. How are you feeling?”

I blow out a breath as I hug him. “Not gonna lie, I’m nervous.” Pulling back, I stare into the brown eyes that are identical to my own. “The thought of stepping back on campus after…” My voice trails off and I bite my lip.
