My thighs squeeze together, my breathing heavy. I don’t need to say anything. He already witnessed my reaction to his words.

The vehicle begins moving, and I focus my other senses on the world around me. When his hand squeezes my leg, his touch feels different being blindfolded. More sensual.

Finally, the vehicle stops and he cuts the engine. “Stay there, love. I’ll guide you out.” I hear him jumping from the vehicle and his door slamming. Then mine opens, the cool breeze floating inside his warm Jeep. He takes my hand, turning me in the seat. Then I feel his arm beneath my legs and the other behind my back as he lifts me, carrying me for the second time today.

“Aren’t you supposed to be taking it easy?” I tease.

“I am. You don’t weigh much, sweetheart. I lift weights heavier than you.”

The image of him sweaty and lifting weights runs through my head. I’d like to give him a workout in the weight room.

I hear him chuckling. “Pervert,” he whispers in my ear.

“Stop reading my thoughts, Max Devlin,” I joke.

He laughs, lowering me to my feet. “Okay, I’m going to remove the blindfold now.”

Anticipation rolls through me as my palms sweat and I can’t stop fidgeting. Max laughs, taking longer to untie it since I won’t stay still. He finally removes it and I open my eyes, wonder filling my gaze as I suck in a breath.

We are standing on a wooden dock, a huge lake surrounding us, the water reflecting the bright autumn colors from the mountain directly in front of us. I soak in all the beauty that surrounds me, my problems falling away, minuscule in comparison to the magnificence of mother nature.

“Oh my gosh, Max. It’s beautiful.” My voice is breathless, overcome by nature’s beauty. I slowly turn, tearing my eyes from the artistry in front of me to the handsome man beside me, so much love and adoration pouring from me.

“Not nearly as beautiful as you, sweetheart.”

He holds up a basket, gesturing for me to sit. He sits beside me, then opens the basket, pulling out a bottle of my favorite wine, along with two glasses.

My hand goes over my heart as my gaze remains on him, enchanted by the look in his eyes. He lets go of my hand, opens the bottle, then pours some into the two glasses. Handing me a glass of wine, he picks up his, the smile on his face brighter than the sun that shines over us.

“I’d like to propose a toast. First, to you, for all you’ve endured and overcome, every single day. Holding onto your empathy and compassion, coming through whatever is thrown your way with grace and strength. Your resilience is inspirational; your allure incomparable.” He pauses, his blue eyes shining with devotion and promise. “And to us. Tragedy brought us together, but can never drive us apart.” His voice lowers, his eyes shining with love. “Here’s to the start of our forever.”

Tears fill my eyes and spill down my cheeks as we clink our glasses together. “To the strongest, most compassionate man I’ve ever met. We share an undeniable connection that defies the laws of nature. But I’ve never trusted anyone or anything more in my life.” My voice quivers with emotion as I stare into the blue eyes that represent my future. “To the start of our forever.”

We clink our glasses, then raise them to our lips, our gazes locked together.

I’m overwhelmed by everything I’m feeling and all the emotions he’s brought to the surface with his sweet words.

Setting my glass behind me, I slide closer to him, eliminating all space between us. I put my arm around his back, then lower my head against the side of his neck. He leans back, supporting his weight on his hands, his head resting on mine.

No words are necessary as we sit there, the cool breeze occasionally washing over us, appreciating nature and one another.

One of my favorite things about us is that we can just sit together, breathing one another in, communicating silently without saying a single word.

After a prolonged period of silence, Max lifts his head from mine, turning his face toward me. “You and me, forever, baby.”

I grin. “Always and forever, my love.”

Chapter thirty

Max

Irelynn walks out of the hotel bathroom wearing this very skimpy, bright red teddy. It has red lace running down the front, and her huge tits are nearly falling out of the sexy, deep V of the top. Red fishnet stockings are hooked to the garters, and she’s wearing these sexy stilettos that scream, “Fuck the hell outta me.”

Goddamn!

I’m so mesmerized I don’t even realize I’m squeezing the water bottle in my hand so hard that water is shooting out the top of it and onto the carpet.
