“You better tell me who the hell the guy is, Irelynn Rose! There is a rule against hot guys being in our apartment without my prior knowledge and consent.” Vanessa’s voice is shrill through my phone, and I can’t help but laugh at her.

I’m sprawled on Max’s couch, my legs crossed at the ankles, my feet bare since I took my sandals off and put them in the foyer. I stare at his giant TV, a movie playing that I’m paying no attention to as Vanessa screams in my ears through the speakerphone. “Well, hello to you too, Vanessa. Are you having a nice time—”

“Cut thecrap, Irelynn. Who is he?”

Laughter bursts out of me as I glance at Max’s stairs. “Since when do I need your permission to have a guy over at our apartment?” I knew I was drawing out the suspense and she was only getting more pissed off.

“Irelynn Rose,” she screams through the phone.

“Fine. His name is Max and I met him when I went to the bookstore yesterday.”

“He’s hot, isn’t he? I could tell by his voice this morning.”

Giggling, I lean my head back, sinking into his cushions, his sofa amazingly comfortable.

“Girl, he’s amazingly hot. On a scale of one to ten, he’s a twenty.” My voice is low just in case he’s around and I don’t realize it. He is stealthy when he wants to be, considering the whole closet incident.

“Oh, why am I not there tomeetthis guy?” She groans. “I have to give my stamp of approval, you know?”

Her words have made my smile fade. What is going to happen when she returns? I will have class with him on Mondays and Wednesdays at ten, but otherwise…will I see him much? I worry my lip between my teeth. He’s primarily been around because Vanessa has been gone and William… I stop the thought in its tracks, not wanting to think about it.

I change the subject, not wanting to dwell on it. “I hear you. So, how is Josh doing? Any progress?” I slouch deeper into Max’s sofa cushions, my feet on his large ottoman.

“He’s doing better… knock on wood.” Vanessa taps on some wood, the sound traveling through the phone, making me smile. “But, girl, when I first got him, he was half-crazed from rage. Apparently, mom has been parading around the house, half naked with her much younger boyfriend.”

“Oh no. Poor Josh.” I shudder. Vanessa’s mom is certainly… different.

“And she has sex with her boyfriend, Logan, all over the house,” Vanessa continues. “Josh can’t even eat breakfast without them making a spectacle of themselves.”

“Jesus, Vanessa, that is horrible. No wonder Josh couldn’t take it.”

“I know, girl. I’m glad I got him out of there.” Vanessa takes a drink of something. “So anyway, did the hot guystaywith you last night? He was there awfully early if he didn’t.”

Vanessa changed the subject so quickly I feel like I’m in a game of ping-pong. “Yes, he did.”Shit, how do I handle this? I don’t want to tell her about William over the phone.

“Ohh… did you fool around with him?” She lets out a throaty laugh.

“Vanessa.” My hand goes to my face, feeling my warm cheeks. I’m debating taking her off speakerphone. But I don’t hear any sounds of Max coming down the stairs, so I don’t.

“Why not? You’re young and single? A blowjob never hurt anyone.” I can hear the smile in her voice, and I could seriously throttle the girl.

“Good grief, Vanessa.” I slap my hand on my forehead. My voice drops to a whisper and my eyes dart around the room. “I didn’t give him a blowjob. God, what iswrongwith you?”

“What is wrong with you, Irelynn Rose? You have a hot man inside our apartment and you’re single. Why the hell wouldn’t you?” Her voice is full of attitude.

“I don’t know why I’m friends with you.” My head leans back on the couch, staring at Max’s ceiling. “You are so inappropriate.”

Vanessa’s laugh is loud through my phone. “Well, I figured if you gave him a blowjob, he’d at least fool around with you. Hopefully he’d end up fucking you. Lord knows, as uptight as you are, you could use a good banging.” She chuckles. “Loosen you up a bit.”

“Jesus Christ, Vanessa.” A movement out of the corner of my eye catches my attention as I lean my head forward. I freeze in horror as Max leans against the living room wall, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes dancing with laughter.

My legs fly off his ottoman as I shoot into a sitting position, my eyes wide. My entire body is red from my embarrassment. I stare at him in horror, knowing he heard everything Vanessa just said. “How long have you been standing there?” I swallow hard.

He lifts one sculpted shoulder. “A while.” He has the biggest damn smirk on his face I’ve ever seen.

“Oh, he’s there? Hi, hot guy,” Vanessa screams through the phone.
