My mouth twitches, a huge grin lighting up my face. The worries about my sexy tone vanish when his strong, deep voice circulates through me, wrapping around me like a security blanket.

“Much better now that I’m talking to you.” My gaze scans over the serene outdoor view, the colors appearing more vibrant. Even the sun in the sky appears brighter.

Or maybe it’s me, glowing bright from within, simply from talking to Max.

He chuckles and I swallow the sound of it, my thighs squeezing together. Vanessa, William, and the cacophony of noise inside the restaurant fades away, leaving behind only me and him.

“I’m glad to hear you feel better. I’m happy to stay on the line with you until I get there.”

Swoon. Giddiness circulates through my lower belly as my breath hitches. “I’d like that.” My heart rate increases as his handsome face fills my mind, squeezing out all other thoughts.

“Isheleaving you alone?” There’s a worried edge to his voice, a hint of anger and if I’m not mistaken, just the faintest inkling of jealousy in his tone.

“Other than staring at me, yes, he’s leaving me alone.” My eyes trail to William, who watches me intently, probably wondering who the hell I’m talking to. Looking away from his penetrating eyes, my gaze moves to Vanessa, who sits there with the largest damn smirk on her face that I’ve ever seen. Immediately, I roll my eyes and shake my head as she laughs.

“Good.” The word comes out as a half-growl, half-relieved sound, which makes my heart squeeze inside my chest.

Vanessa waves her fork at me, drawing my attention to her. ‘Does he sound jealous and pissed off?’ She mouths to me, her eyes twinkling with amusement. Giving her a slow nod, she bounces in her seat, mouthing, "Iknewit." She’s practically dancing in the booth with glee. Shaking my head, I turn my face to the window.

But not before she saw exuberant smile that lights up my face, betraying all the thrill I’m feeling inside. Although I’d never admit it to her, that slight growl he released into the phone really affected me in ways it shouldn’t.

Ways that make me want to wrap myself around him, tearing his clothes off… An embarrassed flush heats my face.God, what is wrong with me? I’m turning into some… nympho or something.

Vanessa’s chin is propped on her hand, a knowing grin on her face. She mouths, "You wanna rip his clothes off and devour him." Her eyes gleam devilishly, her smile widening as I sink into the booth, lowering my head so my curls fall forward, hiding my face.

Focusing on my conversation with Max, I clear my throat. “Are you going to be here soon?”

“Pulling into a parking space now, gorgeous. Do you need me to stay on the phone until I walk inside?”

My heart thuds faster when he calls me gorgeous, his tone low and husky, goosebumps pebbling my skin. I open my mouth, and an awkward squeak comes out. Vanessa immediately starts laughing, deepening my humiliation.

Squaring my shoulders, I clear my throat. “No, we can hang up. I’ll see you soon.”

He chuckles. “Sooner than you think. I’m getting ready to step through the door now.”

My eyes immediately raise to the door, my nerve endings tingling when he hurries inside, sliding his phone in his back pocket and pulling his sunglasses from his face. He looks harried and worried—until his eyes land on mine. His eyes are darker, nearly sapphire, studying me as he crosses the room, relief lightening his irises to his normal baby blue when he sees that I’m alright.

I’m more than okay as he hurries toward me.

The bright, reassuring smile on his face fills me with a lethal combination of security, lust, and hopefulness. He attracts a lot of attention from patrons and waitresses alike as they turn their heads, eyes trailing over his body and to his face, but he doesn’t pay them the slightest bit of attention.

He has eyes only for me.

He’s wearing a pair of light-colored denim jeans, his thigh muscles flexing against the fabric with every step he takes. The ripped muscles of his torso strain against his fitted, navy blue t-shirt.

I’m no longer breathing as he reaches the table, the scent of woods, musk, and peppermint wrapping around me, his protective energy infusing me with safety and security. My body warms and my palms turn sweaty as I gaze at him, unblinking. I’m fairly certain I haven’t blinked since he stepped foot through the door.

“Max—” his name comes out breathless and throaty.

I’m speechless as he slides into the booth beside me, his leg touching mine, my body tingling all over. His hands move to my face, cupping it delicately in his large, strong hands. His face tilts closer to mine as he studies me intently, warm breaths lightly feathering over my skin.

“It’s okay, beautiful. I’m here. You’re safe. I won’t let that asshole touch you.” He turns his head, giving William a murderous glare, my face still cupped in his hands. As he turns back to me, shifting closer, all reason escapes me.

My hands have a will of their own as they land on Max’s broad chest, feeling the muscles contract and quiver beneath my palms as I slowly slide them to the back of his neck. Leaning closer, my eyes move to his full, pink lips, desperate to taste them, especially when they part, a heavy breath expelling from them, landing softly on my skin. My eyes lazily glide up his face, locking with his baby blues, desire burning from them, incinerating my insides.

Like two magnets, we both close the distance between us, our breaths feathering over our skin before our lips come together, softly and reverently. Everything falls away except the two of us as our mouths move together, his hands moving into the fall of my hair. The flame that flickers between us ignites quickly, fire spreading through our bodies as we deepen the kiss.

And oh God, no one has ever kissed me the way Max does. His lips press against mine as if he wants to memorize every detail, like a painter who studies nature with all his senses so he can put his brush to the canvas later, every painstaking detail ingrained in his head. His lips are featherlight against mine, causing tingles to rush through my body, like an electric spark that lights up every nerve ending.
