Oh, shit. She caught me staring and her little sexy booty is marching over right now.

Abort, abort.

Too fucking late. How was I supposed to know she would be over there at the same time Theo had a craving for ice-cream?

“Hey Scar, what’s up?” Even my voice knows it’s in trouble.

Hands on her hips, she huffs out, “Can I talk to you for a minute? Alone?”

Then, she turns to Rowan and asks, “You’re not a serial killer who likes to kidnap pre-teens, are you?”

Rowan shakes her head, her spoon halfway in her mouth, grinning around a bite of vanilla ice-cream as Theo scrunches up his button nose, side-eying her before turning his head back down to his phone.

“Okay, we’ll be right outside,” Scarlett directs that statement to Theo before dragging me out the front door.

Spinning to face me, I school my expression for her. She’s so damn cute when she’s mad, even when it’s aimed at me.

“What are you doing here?” Her body is close to mine—one tiny step and she’d be flush with my chest.

Do it, Grey.

Instead, I shrug and put my hands in my pocket, smirking. “Eating ice-cream.”

She doesn’t like my answer. “I’m serious. Are you spying on me and Kellen?”

Okay, I admit, there was a time Ididspy on her while she was on a date, but that’s not the case here.

The breeze swirls her skirt and blows her hair across her face. This time, I don’t hesitate to put it behind her ear despite the daggers flying from her eyeballs. I want to live dangerously, I suppose. Especially with this spitfire.

No one knows this spunky woman like I do. No one. Not even Kellen the Felon. More like a misdemeanor—petty crime as a kid. Yes, I did a background check on him. Or specifically, I had Isaac’s friend do it. There’s no need to tell her. It’s clear from their lackluster body language at the bookstore, vandalism is the least of his worries. I try not to be giddy about it.

“Are you even listening to me?” Her hands grip her hips, and she glances nervously across the street.

“I did not bring Theo to get ice-cream to spy on you. Merely a coincidence.” I reassure her.

She eyes me for a moment before slumping her shoulders. “Sorry, I’m just in a mood.”

Leaning against the building, I cross my arms. “Not going so well?” I tilt my head to the bookstore. How terrible of a human am I to hope it’s going poorly?

She exhales heavily and plants herself next to me, a cloud of her lavender perfume making me lose my mind. “We seemed to have a lot in common on our first date, but since then, it’s just… I don’t know—”

“Tedious. Dull. Boring with a capital fucking B.” I smirk and bite my lip, trying to put a smile on that perfect face of hers.

“Grey!” she whacks me on the chest as I laugh. “Be nice. He’s a nice guy.”

I snort. “But is nice what you want, Scar?” I’m facing her now, and my God, she’s so beautiful. The sunlight reflects off her blonde hair, creating a halo. If only I could spit out that she deserves the best, and I’d be willing to give her the best if she’d let me.

“Nice is never a bad thing, but… something is off. I should give up dating, enjoy my life at the center and being Theo’s mom. And your friend,” she says it hesitantly.

That damn word. Just add girl in front of friend and I’d be a helluva lot happier. Wife would be even better. I can make her happy, I know I can. And now that Preston has given me his blessing, there shouldn’t be anything stopping me from telling her.

Except, he pops out the door, reminding me thereissomething—someone stalling me.

Theo.
