Once she’d figured out, in college, what she actually wanted

and truly desired, she was careful. Self denial was possible in

other areas of her life, but not that one. She’d just learned how

to be discreet and careful. Her personal life stayed her personal

life, in all aspects.

How was it, then, that for the past two weeks, everything

she’d spent over a decade working for was at risk of

crumbling?

“Ms. Thompson?” Giana’s secretary knocked on the door of

her office. She opened it and stuck her head in. “I just wanted

to let you know that your one o’clock is early. He’s in the

boardroom.”

It was barely noon. Distractions like this were normally

something Giana dealt with smoothly. She didn’t let it get to

her. Business was something unpredictable. Her current mood

had festered for thirteen days, to be exact, and she wanted to

leap up from her desk chair and snarl that she’d like the

meeting cancelled.

Instead, she composed herself and made sure that her face

revealed nothing. “Thank you. I still have some work to get

done here before I can leave. Can you make him comfortable

for another half an hour? We’ll split the difference that way.”

Look at me, being nice and conciliatory, even with people

who don’t respect my time and think they can show up and

make demands.

“Sure. Of course.”

“Thanks.”

Giana let out a rough sigh when her office door was firmly

closed again. She’d been away from the office for two days,
