When his eyes held mine, there was appreciation sparkling in them. His lips kicked up into a smirk. “Damn, Autumn, you are breat—”

He was interrupted by the presence of the dwarf. “Thanks back there, but I ‘ad it handled,” said a thickly accented voice.

Little Warrior

We turned to the dwarf. I’d seen only one dwarf in my life, and he’d been boarding a ship in Pearl Bay to get out of Catalan and the brutal persecution that Amira put the dwarves through.

This dwarf warrior sized us up as we did him. Not that there was a lot of…sizing.I nearly smirked openly at the pun but wisely kept it to myself.

“Sir, what ye did with the sword…”

Up close, the dwarf seemed to second-guess Autumn’s figure and size. Never one for handling sexism, Autumn yanked the hood down and let the single braid swing free. The chill in the wood had accosted us to keep our hoods up.

The dwarf looked stricken. “But ye jus’ a wee human girl.”

My heart tripped. I had once seen Autumn as an innocent girl, but she had quickly corrected that misconception.

Autumn’s brows lifted, and her mouth thinned. “I’m just…What?”

I chuckled. Autumn’s head whipped to me, and I hid the chuckle behind my hand. Then, when her eyes remained on me, I swallowed and choked.

She sent me a withering glare as I coughed.

“You are half my height,” she continued when her eyes went back to the dwarf, “shouldlittlereally be the word to use, dwarf?”

The dwarf sputtered. “Human women are not—”

“We are notwhat?” She hissed.

Just then, another howl cut through the wood.

“Let us part ways now, friend. Well met.” I said quickly, tipping my head. I gripped Autumn’s arm before she couldn’t shoot a dagger at this dwarf’s heart.

We headed off in a random direction, away from the howls.

“You’re sure this is the way to Mondu, Sahlyn?”

“I… think so.”

“What are ye lookin’ fer again?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know, dwarf? You’re lucky you’re still alive.”

“Autumn, he is adwarf, and we are looking for adwarvenstronghold, remember?”

She groaned. “I’m praying to the Goddess of the Beyond we can run into another dwarf in this cursed forest.Anyother.”

“I’m righ’ ‘ere,” the dwarf grumbled.

“I prayed these wolf creatures had killed you off.”

I grinned. I couldn't help myself—this woman.

“Oh, girlie, we—”

“Do not call megirlie. Let’s go, Sahlyn.” Autumn headed off, dragging me behind her.

“Autumn, we—"
