Settling into a plush, padded chair next to the couch, Anya curled up and waited for Kira and Sunny to sit on the couch before asking, “Does this have something to do with Hawk? I saw him earlier today visiting with Jesse. He looked bad.”

“Bad how?” Sunny asked Anya before she could stop herself.

“Bad like you. Dark circles under his eyes, obviously hadn’t slept, just…sad. What happened?”

Sunny gave the girls a rundown of last night, brushing away tears as she spoke. “And then I told him I never wanted to see him again.”

Kira let out a disgusted sound. “What an asshole! I have to say, I’m totally shocked. I didn’t think Hawk was the kind of guy that would do something like that, and I’ve known him a long time. We were both in the LA movie scene at the same time, and he never came off as a douchebag.”

“Hold on,” Anya said quickly. “Let’s not be so quick to judge. Why does Hawk have to be lying? Maybe he’s telling the truth. Maybe nothing went on between them.”

“Yeah, right,” Sunny snarled. “Goddess practically humps his leg every chance she gets.”

Anya held up a placating hand. “Really, I don’t think it’s like that between them. I…I can’t explain it, but I don’t think anything happened between them in that room.”

“A private room,” Sunny said before she swallowed hard. “He never does scenes in a private room.”

“Well, I’m sure he had a good reason,” Anya said lamely.

“Seriously?” Kira gave Anya a disbelieving look before turning back to Sunny. “What a dick. I’m so disappointed in him. I’ve known him for years and I really thought he was a great guy.”

“He is a great guy.” Anya shook her head and blew out a frustrated breath. “Sunny, I’m telling you, nothing happened between them. I know this because…Uh, I kinda overheard Hawk talking to Jesse.”

“What?” Sunny asked. “How?”

“I didn’t mean to listen in,” Anya quickly explained. “But I was on my way to the kitchen, and I passed Jesse’s study. The door was open, so I kinda overheard a little bit. Hawk was being really loud, which was weird, so it caught my attention. I only listened to a little bit, but it was enough that I’m positive nothing of a sexual nature happened between them.”

“What do you mean?” Sunny tried to ignore the faint sense that maybe…maybe she was wrong.

“I mean he wasn’t talking about having a good time with her. He said that Goddess—look, it really isn’t my place to say anymore, but… Goddess had some…bad things happen in her life. If you don’t believe me, ask Mistress Onyx. She had to come help with—uh, Goddess’s aftercare. It was not a good session.”

“What do you mean by ‘bad’ things?” Kira asked.

“I can’t talk about it.” Anya said firmly. “I love you both to death, but it would be really, really uncool for me to share it without Rhiannon, I mean Goddess’ permission.”

A sinking feeling settled into her stomach as Sunny attempted to hold onto her anger. “But everyone said they’d…”

“Everyone,” Anya snorted. “You based all of this off gossip, right? Come on, Sunny. You know better than to believe the whispers that flow around Club Wicked like the Amazon river on steroids. Especially from some of the drama llama submissives that Matt hangs out with. They love to stir shit. And it’s no secret you and Goddess are usually at each other’s throats. You know there are manipulative people that would love to see you two fight for their own sick amusement.”

Kira shifted uncomfortably next to Sunny and gave her a chagrined look. “Damn it, she’s right. I was so ready to go all ‘girl power’ that I didn’t consider the source of the information. Ironic, considering how many lies were printed about me back when I was doing movies.”

Sunny curled up on the sofa, grabbing a pillow and holding it to her middle. “I think I messed up.”

“I think you did, too,” Anya said gently. “But I also think you might want to call Hawk and apologize.”

With a groan, Sunny looked down at her hands then rubbed her thumb over a slight chip in her red nail polish. “Yeah, I should. I feel so stupid.”

“Hey, don’t be so hard on yourself,” Kira crooned as she rubbed Sunny’s shoulder. “We all make mistakes.”

“We’ve got to head out if we’re going to make it to the theater in time,” Anya said as she stood then walked over and hugged Sunny. “Call him, okay?”

“Okay.”

Chapter 6

Two weeks later

Sunny was having a really bad, terrible, no good, everything-that-could-go-wrong-did kind of night.

First, she’d found out her mom was in jail—again. On yet another prostitution charge. Hawk’s PI had informed her and included a picture of Lisa’s mugshot in the email. It had been a sobering sight. Her once beautiful mother looked like a walking corpse. She was gaunt, with huge hollows in her cheeks and dark circles beneath her eyes. By the sunken look of her scabby lips, she was missing some teeth as well.
