He shakes his head and looks at the doctor for some assistance. “You were just paraphrasing.”

“I guess.” He shrugs. “But you were pretty mad.”

Just hearing the words that Jordan would say about me is like a slice to my heart. He’s never hurt me like this before. I’d also be lying if it didn’t occur to me that I felt more pain hearing about what Jordan said about me than the fact that my engagement was over.

“Are there any other important facts we should know about?” I ask, wanting to get all the information we can and get the hell out of here. I can feel Jordan’s eyes on me, but I refuse to look at him. If I do, I know I will burst into tears right here.

"Well, the cop that brought you in said it all happened outside the Ye Olde Wedding Chapel on the Strip.”

“A wedding chapel?” I look down at my hands, needing to make sure that there isn’t a gold band around my left ring finger—there isn’t.

It's only then that I notice another certain ring is missing from my hand. My engagement ring is gone, and God only knows where that could be. I'm sure Michael will want it back, but I also didn't want to be cheated on, so I guess we both are shit out of luck.

“Yeah, that’s all I know.” He points over his shoulder. “I need to get back to work.”

“Thank you, doctor,” Jordan says, but I turn and start walking towards the door.

I’m already at the doors when I hear him jog to catch up to me, quickly falling into step next to me.

“Please don’t be mad,” he says. “I’d just been hit by a cab.”

“Which you don’t remember.”

“Exactly, so that tells you it was probably pretty bad.”

I roll my eyes and point to his wrist. “They released you. It couldn’t have been that bad.”

“Are we actually debating the varying degrees of which I got hit by a cab because I was chasing after you? And you’re the one who is mad?”

“I’m not mad," I say, stepping off the curb into the parking lot.

“Really? The way you are stomping away from me says otherwise.”

“Fine, you want to know the truth?” I ask, finally turning to look over at him. “I’m—”

“Look out!” Jordan says, yanking my arm and pulling me against him.

The sound of car breaks squealing, and a loud peel of a car horn blasts as it passes us. It takes a moment for my brain to catch up to what just happened.”

“Are you okay?” Jordan asks.

My heart thumps wildly in my chest, and it isn't because of the adrenaline coursing through my veins. He doesn't let me go, and for the first time in what feels like twenty-four hours, I feel like everything is going to be okay. There’s no reason to think it might be, but standing here in Jordan’s arms, I’m safe from everything.

“I’m fine.” I manage to squeak out. “Thank you.”

Jordan lifts his hand and runs his fingertips over my cheek, pushing aside a few loose strands of hair off my face. Something flashes in his eyes, but it’s gone before I can even be sure it was there. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think it was something more than just the friendship we share—maybe even love.

My body moves before I can stop myself. I push up onto my toes, wanting so badly to close the distance between us. Jordan inhales sharply and pulls back.

“We can’t do this,” he says.

JORDAN

What am I saying?

The woman of my dreams is in my arms, she almost tries to kiss me, and I say no? That cab must have hit me harder than I thought because my heart would like to curb stomp my brain for pulling me back.
