“Your turn, city girl.”

“Is that okay?” I ask Maya.

She hands me an outfit she picked out that she’s convinced will fit me. “Go.”

I start my shower taking a couple of extra moments to inhale Theron’s shampoo. Imagine him standing next to me whispering in my ear and holding my waist again. And damn, if I wasn’t in someone else’s house and Maya wasn’t waiting her turn, I’d make good use of that scent and get a little relief between my achy thighs.

Even though Maya’s clothes are tight, I’m feeling pretty good when I walk out to join them in the dining room again. That feeling is ripped away, though, when I hear Theron and his mom shouting over one another and I see Maya sitting with her elbow propped on the table holding her head in her hand, a bored look on her face.

I try to sneak around them without eavesdropping or them noticing me but their mom catches me. She flashes me a quick smile before turning back to Theron who is in the middle of a rant and says, “We’ll finish this later.”

Theron hangs his head as she steps around him. And I hear him groan when she introduces herself. “You must be Skye. I’m Lisa.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Everts.”

We shake hands.

“Please, call me Lisa.” She’s so sweet. Her hands are soft and warm. Loving to be precise. It’s hard to believe she was yelling just a minute ago.

“You ready to go?” Theron asks, acting like he didn’t just have a near-knockdown drag-out fight with his mom as he drags me away from her.

My voice fails me. I feel like an intruder in their lives.

“Hey!” Maya yells. “I still need to shower.”

“Hurry the fuck up. We’ll be in the truck,” Theron barks.

“Ten minutes,” Maya says disappearing down the hall toward the bathroom.

Theron grumbles pulling me along with him outside.

I don’t know what to say or even think. Should I be worried? Scared? Angry?

At his truck, Theron pauses with his hand gripping the handle on the passenger door. My bicep throbs under his grip. “Theron?”

“Get in,” he says letting me go and opening the door.

I climb into the cab. Theron crosses around the front of the truck rolling his head from one side to the other. Working out the tension in his neck.

Silence stretches the space between us when he sits in the driver’s seat and stares out the windshield.

I have no idea what I’m going to say, I can’t stand the silence any longer.

“We picking up Penny?” Theron asks taking me off guard and breaking the silence before me.

“She’s going to meet us there.”

When he doesn’t continue the conversation—not that there was more to say on the subject—silence comes between us again.

“Hey, listen. I’m—,” Theron starts but is cut off by Maya pulling the door next to me open. “What are you losers waiting for? Let’s go. Scootch over.”

Maya climbs in as I slide across the bench seat to sit in the middle next to Theron.

My knee bumps his leg and I pull it away smashing my knees together as fast as I can.

“Don’t worry, city girl,” he says, his tone lighter. “I don’t bite. Hard.” He tosses me a wink and it’s a miracle my legs don’t fall open.

The only thing going through my head as he backs the truck down the drive is a pep talk desperately trying to convince me that that was just a run-of-the-mill tease and not him flirting with me.
