She got the showing. She’s hiding her joy because she thinks I’m mad at her. I’m not happy with her keeping this from me but I’m not mad. More than anything I’m concerned. I don’t ever want her to feel like she can’t tell me something.

“How’d it go?” I ask her as cheerfully as I can when she climbs in the truck.

Her smile brightens a bit. “I got it.”

“Fuck yes. I knew it. I fucking knew it. Way to go, city girl.” I get my arms around her and pull her across the bench seat to hug her so tight she squeaks. “I’m so fucking proud of you.”

There’s a gaping silence. It only lasts a moment but it’s so massive it feels like it lasts forever before Skye’s body shakes and she sobs burying her face in my chest.

“Aw. Come on, city girl. It’s a happy day. Your dreams are comin’ true.”

“I don’t want them if I don’t have you to share them with.” Her words are almost incomprehensible as she tries to speak through her sobbing.

“What are you talking about? I told you I’m all in. In to the end.”

“Even after I leave? After not seeing me for a month or more?”

“There’s only one way to find out.” It’s a deliberate challenge. I will be here for her no matter how long she’s gone. I would promise her that right now but she needs to come to believe it on her own. I’ll hate the distance but I think she needs it. She needs time to trust that no matter how much distance is between us, I will always cross it to get to her.

“Where are we going?” Skye asks as I drive out of town, toward home.

“Marta comes home today, doesn’t she?”

“Oh. Yeah.”

“I’d also like to tell my mom about us before Maya does.”

Martawasaslaidback as I thought she would be when we told her about us. She made the connection that it was Theron I was with on my birthday. There was a flash of disappointment in her eyes but it faded quickly. Not sure why but I appreciated her nonjudgmental attitude. It makes me wonder if it has something to do with Pete only being something like a boyfriend. Perhaps she felt it wasn’t her place to judge. Since she never told me any more about him, I can only guess.

The first thing out of Theron’s mom’s mouth when we sit down at the dining room table and tell her is, “Just so you know, I expect lots of grandbabies.”

To my relief, Theron doesn’t react one way or another. He just looks at me and shakes his head telling me not to mind her.

I’m not against having kids. Just don’t want them yet. Too many things I want to do first. Theron hasn’t even told me he loves me. Hell… Maybe he doesn’t. I don’t know. And do I love him? I want to say I do but if I do, wouldn’t I have told him about the meeting with Mina? You can’t have love without trust, right? That’s basically what Theron said. The only way this is going to work is if I can trust him. And how can he believe I trust him if the reason I didn’t tell him about the meeting was because I thought he’d bail on me as soon as he got the chance?

“Skye,” Maya sings when she and Penny walk in. “We’ve been looking all over for you.”

“Been a busy day,” I tell her.

“You told Mom?” Maya asks Theron after she takes the temperature of the room.

“They told me,” Theron’s mom says with a smile.

“And you’re okay with it?” Maya gags.

We all chuckle but Maya doesn’t find it funny at all.

“Anyway,” Maya says. “They’re showing a movie in the park tonight. You coming?”

“I can’t. I gotta pack.” Not really but I thought saying it would get the message across.

Maya’s jaw drops and Penny smiles widely. “You got it?” Penny asks.

“I got it,” I answer and they both rush over and nearly tackle me off the chair.
