What the hell was he talking about?

"Sorry. I know this is weird but at this point, I'm in too deep and need to know who the hell this guy's looking for. Because honestly, the whimsical way he described her, like listening to a fairy tale, I think he might have dreamed her up."

Katie's heart skipped then thumped against her ribs.

No way. It couldn't have been him. Not after the way she'd rejected him. Unless he'd talked to Kyle before she ran into him—ran over his heart.

"Anyway, one of the Tau Gamma Psi guys came in last week wondering if I'd ever made coffee for a woman with golden hair, sapphire eyes, and a project due for Professor Poopface. I would have laughed if I hadn't thought the guy could kick my ass. Instead, I told him I didn't look that closely at everyone who came through the line and certainly didn't know everyone's workload but I'd keep an eye out. Since then, I've asked a few blonde-hair blue-eyed women if they knew a Professor Poopface..." He paused rubbing his fingers into the hollow of his cheek. "Let me tell you, I'm surprised I got through the week without someone serving me a restraining order.

"Long question, short, you hadn't been in for several days and fit his description better than anyone. So, when I saw you here, now, I had to ask… Do you have a project due for Professor Poopface?"

Ho.ly.shit.

The thudding in Katie's chest spread to her ears. Had she heard all of that correctly?

He'd blacked out. How could he have remembered that? And if he remembered that, how much more had he remembered? She'd said a lot that night she hoped he wouldn't. Especially the part about feeling connected to him in a way that scared her because she could see herself risking her plans to be with him.

Holy fucking shit. That's why he came looking for her. That's why he insisted on asking her out when she insisted on leaving. His drunk brain must have only remembered half of what she'd said. He’d forgotten the part about why it could never happen.

Damn it. She never should have let Amber talk her into going to that party. Certainly not with the intention of hooking up with someone.

How the hell had she ended up with the one frat guy that wanted more than a hookup?

And what was she supposed to do aboutthis?

She could have told Kyle no, it wasn't her he'd been looking for.

That's just cruel.

If he was as invested in his search as he’d claimed, she'd doom him to ask every blonde he ever met if she knew a Professor Poopface. Katie couldn't let him humiliate himself any more than he already had.

"Yeah. That's me," Katie admitted.

Kyle slumped over bracing his hands on his thighs. When he stood straight again a second later, he blew out a breath. "Thank God."

She gave him a moment to breathe in his relief before asking, "Is that all? He didn't… leave a message for me or anything?"

"Sorry. No. He just said he'd check in with me in a few days. But that was almost a week ago."

Her thundering heart stopped.

Of course he hadn't checked in. He'd found her and she'd ended the need for him to look any further.

"Thank you for delivering the message.”

"I'm just glad it's over. Though, admittedly, it had been a fun sort of adventure."

Kyle said goodbye leaving Katie unsure how they could return to their normal routine after all of this. Maybe she'd find a new dealer. Campus town was not short on coffee shops. But this was the best.

On the way to her car, driving to the store, walking down the aisles piling food in her cart on autopilot, Katie's lips twitched with a smile she didn't deserve to wear.

He'd gone out of his way to find her. None of her past flings had done that. As far as she knew. Maybe they'd just asked the wrong barista to look for her.

What did it mean that he had? Was she just overthinking the entire situation?

Yes.

Whether it meant something or not, she was definitely putting too much thought into it, when there was nothing she could do to get answers. She'd ruined any chance she had with him. It was over.
