After forcing the medicines down, Isaac hid under his blanket with every intention of falling asleep but instead, he lay there watching Katie contort her face in a dozen different ways as she stared at her screen. Wondered, as his brain fogged over if she felt anything at all when they touched. Wondered if he stood a chance at changing her mind because his heart ached for her to touch him over and over again.

It didn't take long before Isaac succumbed to the medicine. His eyes falling shut. His brain and body drifting off to sleep recalling the feather-light touch of Katie's fingers against his skin. Wanting to hold her in his arms again.

Chapter 19

Hours passed—her coding, Isaac snoring. It wasn't until the low battery warning popped up in the corner of her laptop screen that she realized she hadn't eaten since breakfast.

"Isaac." Katie put her laptop in her seat then tiptoed toward the bed. "I'm going to make something to eat. I'll bring you some soup."

After he grumbled something that sounded vaguely like "okay," Katie went downstairs.

If she had thought it would have taken less than an entire day to give the kitchen a proper cleaning, she would have and then made a decent meal for once. Instead, she let it go and made herself a sandwich.

She had never taken a long look at the structure or design of the frat house before. It had simply been a place to party.

Sitting on the barstool, pulled up to the island in the middle of the kitchen, she found herself admiring the intricate details in the woodwork. The trim and flying buttresses above eye level untouched compared to the rest of the house. Except for one marred spot on the wall above the sink.

Katie chewed the last bite of her sandwich on her way over to investigate.

Squinting and standing on her toes, she leaned her hips against the sink and read the words carved then scratched over in the wood;Isaac and Lauren 4ever.

"I see you found my biggest mistake."

Katie spun at Isaac's raspy words.

"What are you doing up? I said I'd bring your food to you."

"It got too quiet without you there clacking on your keyboard."

Katie walked over and touched the back of her palm to his forehead. Pausing with her hand on his stubbly cheek, she noticed the appreciation in his bloodshot eyes.

How does he do that?

How did he make her want him with nothing more than a look—a word—simple things she should have been able to brush off?

"You're not out of the woods yet," she said returning to the cabinets for a can of chicken noodle soup. "Your fever still needs to break. This is most likely only the calm before the storm."

"Encouraging," he said slumping onto the barstool she'd been sitting at before. "I think cabin fever will kill me before the sickness does."

"The last thing we need is for you to think you're well enough to go out, just to infect the rest of the world."

Braving the stove covered in a slick film of grease, Katie set the pot with equal parts soup and water on the red hot coil.

"Aren't you going to ask?"

"About what?" she asked like she didn't know what he was talking about. She kept her eyes on the soup as she stirred.

"About Lauren."

She shrugged a little. "It's not really my business."

"Doesn't mean you can't be curious."

She was. Extremely curious. He hadn't exactly seemed the type to have been in a relationship worthy of immortalizing like that.

"Well? Are you curious?" he asked.

Katie took the soup off the burner. Turning toward Isaac and the bowl she'd set out for him, she nodded.
