Katie hid her face flushing with heat. She propped her head on her hand with her elbow on the counter. Pushing a little bit of egg around her plate with her fork, she hoped he didn't ask her what she'd been thinking while she'd absentmindedly stuffed her face.

He probably thought she was a disgusting pig. Good thing she'd already vowed not to sleep with him. He wouldn't want her greasy fingers all over him now anyway.

His calloused fingers grazed her forearm. "What's wrong?"

Everything.

But especially how comforted she felt when he touched her.

Before she made the mistake of kissing him again and getting rejected again, Katie said, "I didnotmean to eat all that."

"Are you embarrassed?"

She nodded unable to meet his eye.

For so many reasons.

"Well, don't be. I'm flattered you ate any of it. The eggs were rubbery and the bacon overcooked."

"Overcooked?" Katie turned her eyes to him, bewildered. "It was perfect. I like it super crispy." Katie about smacked herself bringing her hand to her forehead. "Obviously."

"I told you, it's all yours."

If she hadn't stopped and let her brain catch up with her stomach she might have finished it off. As it was, she couldn't eat another bite.

"Thanks but I've definitely had my fill."

Isaac took the plates and set them by the sink.

What now?

Would he ask her to leave? Or would he wait until she excused herself? She hardly had an excuse to leave. She was well ahead on her project since taking care of Isaac had occupied the part of her brain that would have tried to distract her with television or video games.

But she had even less reason to stay. He didn't need her to care for him anymore. And he'd proven, when he pushed her out of the shower, he didn't want anythingelsefrom her. Though, she would have given it to him.

"I suppose you should probably get going," he said at last. "Don't want to keep you from your project any longer than I already have." Isaac leaned back bracing his hands on the edge of the counter on either side of him.

Katie stood. "I suppose."

She had no reason to stay but she didn't want to leave. She liked Isaac. More than she ever thought she would. More than she should.

"I regret not having that coffee with you," she said stopping in the doorway between the kitchen and living room.

What the fuck, mouth?

Keep walking, feet.

There was no point fighting with them. They’d already won.

Chapter 22

"Katie?" Isaac said after almost a minute watching her stand eerily still in the doorway.

"I fucked up. I want to make it up to you. I want that date and… You know what? I want my spring break," she said coming back into the kitchen. "Don't you?"

"Umm. I'm not sure I—"

"I've worked my ass off all term. You've been beaten to hell by me and that stupid virus. We deserve a break."
