Isaac's brow shot up. "Oh, really? I'll have you know I'm the best Quarters player in the house."

"We'll see."

"Is that a yes?" he asked.

"What are we drinking?"

???

Katie finished eating, then they raided the liquor cabinet before clearing the coffee table in the living room.

Katie sat next to Isaac on the couch facing the shot glass of tequila on the table in front of them.

He handed her the quarter. "Ladies first."

"When I make this, I'm the rule maker, right?"

"Sure." He sounded skeptical but her confidence came from a genuine place. She hadn't played the game in some time but she'd been good at it when she had played.

Hoping it was like riding a bike, Katie took the quarter. Pinching it between her thumb and index finger, she took aim.

Even if she didn't get it in this time, as long as she got one in before he did, that would be enough to hold over his head for a while.

"We need music," Isaac exclaimed as Katie let the quarter go. It bounced and clinked off the rim of the glass.

"Hey! Jerk. You did that on purpose."

"I haven't a clue what you mean." His cheek wrinkled with a smile as he tapped his phone's screen. A few seconds later, music filled the room from the speakers hanging in each corner.

"I get a do-over.” She snatched the quarter off the table as he reached for it.

"No way. If this was a real party you'd be contending with a lot more distractions than that. I just made the experience more… authentic."

"Oh," Katie said. "Is that how we're playing it?"

Isaac's eyes widened.

"You overplayed your hand, didn't you?"

"Shit. Fine. Have your do-over," he said.

"Or I get to distract you once to level the playing field."

"You can't physically interfere with the shot."

"Well, duh." She rolled her eyes but laughed internally at how seriously he took the game. Actually, they'd both been overcome with the competitive spirit. Which made it even more fun.

"Should we mute the music?"

"Nah," he said. "I know a distraction is coming. You didn't. The music is fair game."

"Your move."

???

Isaac had hoped she would be a good sport but never guessed she'd have gotten this into it. Then again, she had proved herself up to a challenge. Taking care of him. Convincing him to have this makeshift spring break. In fact, she'd succeeded at everything she'd set her mind to since they met.

Holding the quarter over the table preparing to shoot, Isaac wondered how much trouble he'd gotten himself into here?
