"You have your choice. I have mine. And I choose not to wake up with regret between us."

Every muscle in Katie's body slacked.

"Shit. That didn't come out right. I didn't—"

She stepped back, out of his grip. "Is there something wrong with me?"

"What? No. Katie—"

"It's just… You show interest." She nodded at his groin as she swayed on loose ankles. "But whenever I return it, you push me away. I mean… I know I pissed you off when I turned you down for that coffee but I apologized for that. Told you I regretted it. I've literally thrown myself at you like…" she paused, her lips moving as she searched the ceiling. Counting. "Three times in the last twenty-four hours. If you don't want me, fine. But would you please just tell me so I can stop making an ass of myself?"

Oh, hell.

Could he have fucked things up with her any more? He never meant to make her think he didn't want her. He just didn't want her like this. Like he'd had every woman before her. Temporary. Meaningless.

She needed to know. She meant too much to him to do it like this.

"There's nothing wrong with you,” he said hoping she'd believe it if he actually spoke the words.

But she just scoffed and crossed her arms.

Isaac took a deep breath and went on, "I do want you."

"Why?" she asked like she was sure she'd cornered him.

"Because you know what you want and unashamedly go after it. You're driven, competitive, and sexy without trying. I want you, Katie. More than you know but not like this. Not until we're both sober and not dying from a super virus."

With her tank top still up around her chest after her failed striptease, Katie slumped into the couch. Isaac sat next to her and helped straighten it out pulling the hem down over her waist.

"It's not fair. I didn't get to ask you any questions or dance or anything."

"Would you like to ask some now?" Isaac asked.

"I won't remember the answers."

"Tomorrow then."

"Promise?" she asked leaning her head on his shoulder.

Isaac reached across his bare chest and tucked behind her ear the lock of hair that had fallen over her face. "Promise."

Chapter 25

It wasn't long before Katie passed out snoring gently with her head on his shoulder. Isaac slid his rear to the edge of the couch leaning his head against the back. She nuzzled into his side hugging his arm. Pleased with the closeness, the soft press of her breasts against the hard muscle of his arm, he stared at the ceiling. Wondering.

He hadn't been oblivious to her advances. There'd been more than enough reasons not to act on them. The one reason that still kept him from taking that final step was him wondering if that was all she wanted.

Sure she'd stuck around while he was sick. While she thought he needed him. While she thought she had an obligation to be there. But after this makeshift spring break? Then what? Was this just a more in-depth hookup? Or was she gearing up for something more permanent?

He could have asked. "Hey, what's going to happen to us when the week is over?" But his fear of the answer outweighed him wanting to hear it.

They still had four days before school started up again. Four days to figure out what was going on between them.

His heart raced. Panicked. What were they going to do for four whole days?

They couldn't keep drinking it away. He couldn't afford to take her out to more than a couple of places and not the best places either. Not that she'd want to do much more anyway. Isaac wouldn't have been a bit surprised if she wanted to get back to her project first thing in the morning.

But that wouldn't have made this much of a spring break. Napping on the couch and one failed drinking game? He could do better than that.
