"But I'm not sure we have marshmallows."

Katie climbed over him. Feet on the floor, she snatched up her undies pulling them on as she made her way to her chair-bed. "Good thing I don't leave home without them." She held up the bag of marshmallows she'd packed the other night.

"You carry a bag of marshmallows around in case of a S'mores emergency?"

Katie wiped the smile from her face getting super serious. "I've been meaning to tell you." She hung her head for a moment before meeting his eye with a stone-cold stare. "I'm in a serious, committed relationship… with marshmallows." She'd barely made it to the end of the sentence before her lips betrayed her and laughter burst out again.

"You have the chocolate and Graham crackers in there too?"

"Meh." Katie tossed his clothes onto the bed. "All I really care about are the marshmallows."

Chapter 31

Virgin.

Isaac still reeled from this discovery as they rummaged through kitchen cabinets and drawers for their indoor S'mores supplies. How was that even possible anymore? Especially for someone as sexually active as she'd proved herself to be?

He wouldn't press the issue since it seemed to be a sensitive subject for her but there were just so many questions. Lead among them, after waiting so long while having plenty of opportunity in the past, why him? What did it mean that she'd chosen him to be her first?

"Found the lighter." Katie held up the red tube, flicked the button conjuring a small orange flame. "Any luck with the crackers and chocolate?"

"Looks like we'll have to settle for the toasted marshmallows on their own."

"Settle." Katie scoffed. "You mean enjoy. Or savor. Or something that doesn't insult my precious." She held the bag to her chest stroking it like a mother would her baby.

"You're weird."

"Yeah? And you want to fuck me. What does that say about you?" Katie turned to the counter with a self-satisfied twinkle in her eye.

"And crass."

"Same argument," she said pulling open the silverware drawer.

Katie sat on what had become her stool untying the twisty around the plastic bag. Isaac sat next to her.

"You should probably grab a glass of water. Just in case one of us drops a glob of flaming marshmallow."

Isaac agreed and filled a large plastic tumbler with water but they successfully toasted every last marshmallow without starting the house on fire.

"I never thought I'd say this but I think I ate too many marshmallows." Katie hugged her stomach with one arm and lay her head on the other on the counter.

"I think I have some antacid in my closet. We should probably get you close to a bed anyway."

"Don't mean to disappoint you once again but I'm not feeling all that sexy right now."

"Actually, I was referring to the inevitable crash you're going to have in about fifteen minutes after eating all that sugar."

Katie groaned struggling to stand.

"Here." Isaac scooped her into his arms cradling her against his chest.

Katie curled closer wrapping her arms around his shoulders. "Why'd you let me eat so many?"

The shock of being blamed almost knocked him down the stairs. "Letyou? I could have tied your arms behind your back, you would have figured out how to use the lighter with your feet."

"I like marshmallows." She sounded like a spoiled child.

"Ah. There's the high. The crash won't be too far behind. Stay here." Isaac lay her on his bed then went to the closet. He found the antacid in the toolbox he'd repurposed for his own custom-built first aid kit.
