"No, but I got to watch old Evan the Charmer strike out as much as I did. So, in the end, I didn't feel so bad." Something in Jake’s eyes disagreed. What wasn’t he saying?

"You spent your break with Evan?"

"Can't complain. I didn't pay for a single drink all week."

"Sorry I couldn't have been there."

"As sick as you were, you wouldn't have been there even if you had gone."

"True." If only Jake knew how things had changed. Isaac wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to tell him. Not yet, at least.

"So, how did you manage all on your own?" Jake asked.

Isaac's throat closed in.

They knew each other well. There was always the chance, even if Isaac told him nothing, Jake would pick up on something being wrong.

"I survived. That's all that matters, right?" Still, he'd avoid it as long as possible.

Jake groaned picking up his bag. "I should just take this straight to the laundromat."

"And the bag you have stuffed full in your room. I can smell it from here," Evan said stopping on the stairs and wrinkling his nose.

Jake had twisted his face mouthing along with Evan.

"He's not wrong, you know," Isaac said after Evan moved on.

"Well, yeah but he doesn't need to be a prick about it. Hey, you probably have a load of stuff infected with plague germs. You want to come with me?"

"Sure." Maybe getting back into his routine would help take his mind off of Katie.

Doubtful but worth a try.

Jake left his bag at the bottom of the stairs and they both went up to collect their laundry.

"Wow," Jake said. "You must have been really sick. I don't think I've ever seen your room this messy."

Isaac had been so caught up having fun with Katie after he got better he hadn't touched the mess of medicine bottles and tissues and other get-well aids on the bedside table. And his bed was uncharacteristically unmade.

"What the fuck is this?" Jake asked as Isaac pulled his laundry basket out of the closet.

Isaac's stomach plummeted to his feet when he turned and found Jake holding up a pair of Katie's panties. She must have missed them packing in the dark last night.

"I can't fucking believe this," Jake went on without giving Isaac a chance to answer. "I go to Cancun. Am surrounded by drunk chicks all week and can't even get a number. You stay here, alone and dying and still manage to get laid. What kind of fucking deal with the devil did you make, man?"

"It's not like that." Isaac didn't want to talk about Katie but how was he supposed to avoid it now?

"Really? Because this little bit of lace tells a different story." Jake spun the lacy undergarment around his index finger.

Isaac ripped them out of Jake's hand and stuffed them in his pants pocket. "It's not fucking like that."

Wasn't it? He'd just finished accusing her of using him to get what she wanted and ditching him.

Regardless of not knowing what the hell to think about Katie leaving, he didn't owe Jake the story.

"What the fuck, man?" Jake asked putting his hands up like Isaac had him at gunpoint. "I didn't mean anything by it. I found a pair of women's underwear on your floor. What was I supposed to think?"

"They could have been mine."
