The time it took him to read it passed in a blur. Isaac's mind spun unable to process how the hell he’d ended up here. How he'd lost her without doing anything wrong.

"She left because she didn't want to use you. That's good." Jake held out the note.

"What does it matter? Different reason, same result. It's over." Isaac took the note back. Scanned it picking out a word here. A phrase there.

Deserve… "I deserve better? She was better." He read her apology again.I'm sorry I couldn't be better. Isaac crumpled the note in his fist.

She didn't write that note. It might have been her hand but the woman he'd come to know over the last week didn't write it. The woman who stripped and climbed in a freezing shower to save him didn't write it. The woman who chased him down with a water pistol and water grenades didn't write it. And certainly, the woman who had spread herself bare on his floor while he watched didn't write it. Because that woman was better and she knew it.

Whatever hand Isaac had played in bringing out Katie's wilder side, it hadn't been enough after old Professor Poopface shoved her back in. If anyone deserved better, Katie deserved better than how he'd treated her. If he hadn't been at the theater and made her feel like shit, she would have come back to the house, finished her project, handed it in, and spent whatever time she had left of the weekend having the fun she most definitely deserved.

"Fuck this." Isaac threw the note in the trash and marched to the door.

"Where are you going?" Jake came after him.

"To get my Blondie back."

"Then I better come with you."

Isaac questioned him with a tilt of his head.

"You still don't know how to find her, right?" Jake took out his phone.

"And you do?"

"Yes, but please don’t ask how." His phone blooped. The sound of a sent text message. Thirty seconds or so later, it sounded with an incoming message. "Let's go."

Jake could keep his secrets. The only thing Isaac cared about was finding Katie. However that happened he didn't care as he followed Jake out.

Chapter 41

Amber: Didn't you get ANY work done over break?

Katie: A ton. It's just this one thing I can't figure out.

She'd finished the third level before leaving the frat house early that morning. And hoped, when she returned to the distraction-free zone of her dorm room, she would only need a few more hours to finish. But that damn bug. Nothing worked.

If she'd been a superstitious person or believed in the supernatural, she'd have blamed Isaac. She might have thought he'd put a curse on her or something for leaving the way she did. She certainly deserved it. Or worse.

Amber: Maybe you could do with a break. I’m at the student union. Come have a coffee with me.

Katie: I'm in this mess because I took a break. If I hadn't messed around with Isaac I'd have figured this out days ago.

Her stomach knotted. There was no way to know if she'd been able to fix it with more time. At this point, she'd all but convinced herself there was no solution. The only reason she hadn't accepted it was if she did, it put a huge hole in her reason for leaving Isaac. She could have removed the door and finished it a couple of days ago. Before they saw Professor Poopface at the theater and avoided seeing the disappointment on his face when he found out she'd put her personal life ahead of the project that would make or break her entire future.

Amber: You at least have to eat something.

Amber: Besides pretzels and marshmallows.

Amber: I'll even let you bring the laptop.

The offer tempted her but Katie couldn't leave. She couldn't spend time with Amber while she worked any more than she could have spent it with Isaac. She wouldn't add hypocrite to her list of faults.

Katie: I'll eat a proper meal tomorrow.

Katie: I promise.

Katie: Now, I have to get back to work. TTYL
