Katie: How?

Isaac: What do you say we start over?

Katie: I'd like that.

Isaac: Party at TGP house tonight. Be there.

Katie: I will.

Chapter 44

Isaac stood next to the drinks table ignoring the conversation the two girls were pretending he was a part of when the front door opened.

Jake.

"She's not coming." Isaac turned toward Jake, away from the two girls not at all heeding the chill of Isaac's shoulder.

"It's still early." As Jake handed Isaac one of the drinks he held, the girl nearest him knocked his arm sloshing beer out of the cup and over his hand.

"Sorry," she said flatly then continued talking to her friend.

After handing off the drink, Jake wiped the back of his hand on his jeans. "I can't believe this many people showed up last minute."

"Or that Evan agreed to a party before finals. How did you convince him?" Isaac wondered what exactly those two had gotten up to over break. What dirt Jake had on Evan that convinced him to lift the party-ban early.

"I'd tell you if I could. But I made a promise."

"That you're exploiting."

"For your benefit."

"True." Isaac dropped it there. Whatever this new magic was Jake had that got shit done, didn't need explaining. It only needed to work a little while longer.

Isaac took out his phone. Maybe she had tried texting to let him know she'd be late or couldn't come for some reason but his phone had died.

Nope.

Full battery.

Jake clapped a hand on Isaac's shoulder. "She'll be here."

"Then you better take your mark."

Jake raised his glass to Isaac before swigging down the liquid courage. "And I absolutely can't believe I let you talk me into this." In a matter of seconds, Jake had stripped naked save for the jockstrap covering his junk. "You owe me."

"Hey." The girl that had smacked Jake's drink raked her eyes up and down Jake's body looking more than satisfied with what she saw.

But before he could capitalize on her attentions, Katie walked in.

"Jake." Isaac felt like shit cock-blocking his friend like this but if Katie turned around before Jake played his part the entire night—Evan's expense, Jake's dignity, Katie's fresh start—would have been for nothing.

Without hesitation, Jake stepped on his skateboard and pushed off gaining more speed than Isaac thought possible before effectively taking Katie's attention with him as he whizzed by.

Phase one complete.

???

Seconds after the near-miss with the streaking skateboarder, a familiar scent filled her nose. Followed by a familiar voice in her ear.
