Spider puts his face next to mine. “You know the deal, Candy. The only reason Eddie gave you until the end of the year is because you agreed to make these good-faith payments. In full. He’s a reasonable man and let the other two slide because it was only a few bucks. But you’re way more than a couple dollars short this time. Even with this.” He thumps the wad of cash on my temple and I’m ashamed to admit it makes me flinch and him smile.

“Start with the pinky,” Spider says and Big Boy pinches my left pinky finger in his free hand.

“No! Please! Just give me another day. I’ll get the rest. I swear,” I beg as my bone creeks struggling to hold together as it’s bent back. Pain shoots up my arm and I clench my teeth bracing for the moment the bone snaps.

“Here’s your fucking money. Now let my girl go and get the fuck out of my club,” Seth shouts shoving a bag in Spider’s chest when he turns to face Seth.

Thankfully, Big Boy had already stopped torturing me when he heard Seth coming. With nothing more than a nod from his partner, after checking the cash in the bag, Big Boy lets me go.

I fall to my knees gasping as Sapphire does the same wrapping her arms around me. “You okay, hunny?” She pulls back the lapel on my jacket. “It’s a little red but I don’t think it’s gonna bruise.” When I finally get a sufficient supply of oxygen to my brain, I realize exactly what just happened. My heart drops and Sapphire pauses the calming circles she rubs on my back when I shoot her a disappointed look. “I’m sorry, hunny. I had to tell him.”

She’s right. I should be thankful. To be honest, I’m surprised Seth didn’t let Big Boy break a few of my fingers before he stepped in, just to teach me a lesson of his own. About keeping drama out of his club. It’s literally rule number one. Though, that rule specifically pertains to no boyfriends on the floor while we’re working, he’ll likely add this to the list now.

“What the fuck, Candy?” Seth asks crouching in front of us. I’m shocked there’s a genuine touch of concern in his voice.

“I got behind on payments.”

“This is why you should have let us pay it right away,” Seth says, turning back into the asshole we all know so well and I know it’s no use arguing with him. Letting the Kings pay was the last thing I wanted because I know what it means. I don’t just owe the Kings money, I owe them my boundless service. No longer will I have a say in the work I do for them. Whatever errand they want me to run for them, I do it. No questions asked. And that deal I had with Seth to keep his patron's hands off me? No good anymore. Every feel they cop is more money in the Kings’ pocket.

“Well…” Seth says standing over me. “It’s over now.”

No. It’s all the same shit, just a different day, under a new thumb.

Chapter 9

LIAM

It didn’t take long for Candace and me to fall into an easy routine. Easier than it should have been for a couple of strangers. But I love every aspect of it, except for one. Picking her up at the club is a cruel torture. I hate it more and more each time she walks out that door. What I hate most is that I could put an end to it.

I want to put all my trust in Candace. If I hadn’t been burned before, I would. I would have that first night. She’s nothing like Sherri. Sherri would have crumbled under the pressure Candace manages to shoulder with the utmost poise and confidence.

Hell, I’m not even sure she’d accept the money if I offered it. Her pride might not let her. It’s part of why she refused to let the Kings cover the debt. I can respect that.

As Candace approaches the car, I notice she avoids looking this way.

That’s odd.

I get out and round the front of the vehicle to open the door for her. Before I do, I stop her with my hands on her shoulders. “What happened?” I ask lifting her chin until her eyes meet mine.

“Long night. There was a bachelor party of exceptionally young men. Not sure any of them had ever seen a naked woman before.” She smiles but it doesn’t reach her eyes.

“Did they touch you? If Seth isn’t keeping up his end of the deal—.”

“No. Liam…” Candace grabs hold of my wrist with both hands to stop me from going inside and doing something stupid. “I’m fine. I’m just tired.” She runs her hand up my arm as she steps close, then wraps both her arms around my waist. “Take me home.”

Her eyes are pleading. I can’t refuse.

Before I open the car door, I put her back against it and arch over her. “I’m a mostly reasonable man Candace, but you’re mine now. Under my protection. And if I find out anyone has ever laid a hand on you, I will fucking end them,” I say before crushing my lips to hers. The deeper the kiss goes the more pliable her body becomes. I grip her thighs and pull her legs up to wrap them around my waist. The heat between us is undeniable but she confirms her need, gently tilting her hips until she finds my dick hard and ready to fuck.

Now I know… This is what I’ve been missing. This need to claim and keep. Maybe that’s why Sherri cheated on me. I didn’t fight for her. Or maybe it’s because Sherri cheated on me that I’m like this now. Whatever the reason, laying claim to Candace feels so fucking right.

It’s hard as hell not to tell her about the money now but it’s never a good idea to make life-changing decisions in the heat of a moment like this. I just need a little time to process these new feelings. Make sure there’s something more than the weight of lust tipping the scale.

“I need you, Liam. Right fucking now,” Candace demands as she full-on grinds her pussy on my cock. The heat is so intense it penetrates our combined layers of clothing.

The parking lot isn’t well lit. Even if there are security cameras, I doubt they’ll be able to pick up any detail. Especially if we’re discreet. Or as discreet as a couple can be fucking against a car in a parking lot.

“Hold still,” I tell her as I reach between us, flip open my fly and free myself just enough to sink into her with the crotch of her spandex boy shorts pushed to one side.
