“I’d rather you walk me to your bedroom.” I push in kissing him again.

He kisses me back but fights against my attempt to cross the threshold back into his apartment.

“Riley…” He holds my shoulders, putting distance between us.

“It’s okay, Daniel.” I step into him again.

“No. It’s not.” He pushes me back again. “Not yet, anyway.” Reaching up, he pushes a stray lock of my hair behind my ear.

“Why not? Don’t you want me?” I ask at the risk of sounding childish.

“Oh, Riley. More than I should. Which is why we need to take it easy. Get to know each other a little better first. I don’t want you to regret this if it turns out we have nothing in common.”

And I know exactly why he thinks that will be a problem. I’ve had the same thoughts.

“You’re worried I have more in common with your daughter than with you.”

Daniel slides his hands down my arms as I ease my shoulders, no longer pushing against his grip. “I might play but I’m not a child, Daniel.”

“I know. Goddammit, do I know.” He shifts his hands, placing them on my hips and pulling me into him again.

If that enormous lump between us isn’t proof of what he thinks about me, I don’t know what is. “But I need a little more time to see you that way and not worry about someone else calling the cops on me because they think I’m taking advantage of you.”

“I understand,” I say though I still want to argue. No one will care. And even if someone does, there’s nothing they can do about it. We are two consenting adults. Fuck what other people think. But I keep my mouth shut. This obviously means a lot to him and I don’t want to push him away again. If he needs some time to adjust, I’ll give it to him.

“Thank you.” He circles his arms around my back and plants a soft kiss on my forehead. “Now, come on.” He takes my hand. “I’ll walk you to your car and take care of the insane parking fee you’ve racked up. Tomorrow I’ll get you a tag to put in your window.”
