“No. It’s not—my knee’s fine. Well, as fine as it can be,” I add when she narrows her eyes.

“Do you want to talk about whatisbothering you?” she asks settling her side into the back of the sofa with her arm over the back, her head propped on her hand.

I reach my arm across my chest to push that errant lock of hair behind her ear again. “I still can’t believe you’re here.”

A quick smile flashes on her lips before she turns her head and plants a kiss on my palm before holding it against her cheek.

“I’m trying hard not to sound like a giddy little girl but I can’t help it. I want you to know there’s no other place I’d rather be. I want to be with you, Daniel.”

“For now.” I drop my hand into my lap. Cast my eyes to my feet. And then to my lame knee.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m an old stick in the mud, Riley. A creature of habit. One of these days, that’s going to get to you and you’ll want more from life than what I can give you.”

“You’re wrong. I already told you, I don’t like doing all that crazy outdoor sports stuff. I’m perfectly happy sitting on the couch watching shitty movies and eating my body weight in baked goods. That’s not going to change. At my core, that’s who I am and I like it that way.”

“That’s what my ex-wife said too.”

“Oh, Daniel.” Riley places her hand on my chest over my heart. “But there’s one big difference you’re failing to see here.”

“What’s that?” I ask, my breath coming more quickly as she slides her hand down my chest and stomach.

Her name is on my lips when her fingers hit the waist of my sweatpants. But it leaves as soon as she speaks in my ear, “I’m not your wife,” and slips her hand into my pants and grips my rock hard length.

A moan passes my lips and my eyes roll back as she pumps me with long, lavish strokes. Desperately grasping for my sense, her name finally escapes but only serves to encourage her.

“Please tell me you have condoms,” she breathes against my ear.

I could lie and put an end to it but she makes me feel too good to say no. “In the bedroom. Top dresser drawer.”

Riley shifts. On her knees beside me, her hand still stroking my cock, she locks her half-lidded eyes with mine. Through a shuddered breath, she says, “I want you so badly but I don’t want to let go. I don’t want you to come to your senses while I’m gone and not let me back in.”

My heart thumps against my ribs as she drops her forehead to my chest. Nuzzling her nose against me she plants long, searing kisses on my skin.

Not only have I lost all sense, I’ve gone beyond it, wanting her at any cost.

When I kiss the crown of her head, the restaurant’s sage and garlic mix with her sweet herbal scent. Both calm and arouse me in ways I never expected.

Thrusting my hands in her hair as I take her face in my hands, I lift Riley’s face and kiss her. When she parts her lips and our tongues collide, she whimpers. Deepening the kiss, pressing her mouth harder to mine, I lose any sense I might have had left.

“Daniel. Your knee,” she protests as I pull her onto my lap and with her ass securely locked in my hands, stand.

An ice pick jabs at the back of my knee cap. It hurts like hell but I don’t care. Biting back the need to cry out, I order her, “come here.” Like the good girl she is, she obeys lowering her lips to mine as I carry her to my bed.

RILEY

I’m torn between forcing Daniel to let me down to save his knee and holding on for dear fucking life to live the rest of it in his arms.

Not once in my, albeit limited sexual experience, have I ever wanted a man as desperately as I want Daniel. Right here. Right now.

Daniel steps into his bedroom and stops us next to his dresser.

And damn, ifmanisn’t the best word to use to describe him. His command. His resolve. His strength. All these things spin inside my head as Daniel hooks one arm under my rear to hold me up while he pulls the top drawer of his dresser open with his free hand.

The gold and black box catches the corner of my eye. I reach in and grab it.
