Julia: Great!

Julia: But I miss you.

Me: Miss you too.

Minutes pass without another message. I assume she got busy but I type out another message just to check. Then immediately delete it.

Riley’s advice worked. She told me to give Julia time to come back to me. I did and she did. Maybe I should stick with that advice. Or at least ask Riley before doing anything else.

That’s what I do. Nothing. Until Riley gets home a little after one o’clock in the morning.

“What the heck are you doing up?” she asks coming into the living room where I’m half asleep on the couch aimlessly flipping through my movie list. No intention of watching anything. Just needing to do something to keep me awake.

“Julia texted me.”

Riley plops on the couch next to me. “Oh, thank God.”

“I don’t know what to do.”

“Did you text her back?”

I hand her my phone so she can read the conversation. “It’s not much.”

“It’s great, Daniel. She’s letting you back in.”

“What do you think I should do now?”

Riley chews her bottom lip screwing her face up in the cutest way while she thinks.

“Invite her over for dinner tomorrow night. Her and Leslie. It will give me a chance to meet her and you a chance to show her you’re ready to accept her choices.”

“I’m the opposite of ready to let her make a choice like that.”

“But you have to be. Because she’s going to make a lot more choice you don’t like and you can either support her in them and be the soft place for her to fall when she faces the consequences or watch her suffer through them on her own.”

God damn, she’s right but it doesn’t make it any easier for me to do.

“Call her,” Riley says scooting closer. Placing her palm on my cheek, she turns my face to hers. “First thing in the morning.” She smooths her thumb over the stubble on my jaw. “I’ll go grocery shopping while you square things away in the shop. That way we can spend the whole afternoon, just the two of us before Julia and Leslie show up.”

“Just make sure you stop by the store after you finish shopping. I told Nell you’d be by. She’s excited to meet you.”

“Oh. Umm… Okay.” Her hand slips from my cheek to my shoulder.

“You don’t hesitate to meet my daughter but my store manager gives you pause?” I ask with a smile.

“Uh, yeah,” she says like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “After this morning? And what happened when you met my—well, not friends but, you know… I just hate for Nell to look at me the way Spencer looked at you. She’s your employee. I don’t want to make things weird between you two.”

“Don’t worry. Nell and I have been through a lot over the years. She’s more of a sister to me than my actual sister. She can handle anything. You know, short of walking in on us while I have you bent over my pottery wheel. Which I wouldn’t mind doing again sometime. Soon.” Wrapping my arm around Riley’s waist, I pull her onto my lap and bury my face in her neck.

“I completely agree.” She hums with the open mouth kiss I leave on her pulse. “But maybe we should get some sleep first?”

“I completely disagree,” I say before palming the nape of her neck and pulling her in until our lips collide.

When she reaches down between us rubbing her hand along the hard ridge of my cock, my lip quirks. “Not so sleepy now, are you?”

“Let’s go to bed.” Her voice is low, full of sleep and sex. With her lip squeezed between her teeth, Riley climbs off my lap. With my hand in hers, she leads me to bed. Where we fall asleep after thoroughly wearing each other out.
