“Makes sense.” The office was quiet and had an aura all its own when Titania wasn’t lighting it up with her own. The space was lifeless and hollow without her.

We spent over an hour looking to no avail. “They must not be here. Maybe the librarian was wrong.”

I sat down in the nearest chair. “I’m exhausted. Can we come back another time or try somewhere else? I don’t think the librarian would point me in the wrong direction on purpose.”

He shook his head, his black hair matching the inky atmosphere all around us. “No, she’s been here forever. Maybe we’re just not looking in the right place. I can bring you home or…”

I perked up at his other suggestion even though I had no clue what it might be. “Or what?”

“Or you could come to my place. It’s actually closer than your dorm.” He shrugged one shoulder as though all of a sudden he was shy and not so sure of himself. It was endearing to say the least. Gods, he was gorgeous no matter what he did.

“I would love to see your place.”

“Really? Okay. Let’s go.”

He was right. In minutes, we were at a set of what looked like apartments just a few feet from Titania’s office. He explained that they were for students who were children of the board members. He had insisted he didn’t want to stay there, but Titania actually wanted him close in case she needed protection.

“Protection from what?” I asked as he put a key into the lock and turned the knob.

“That I don’t know. Doesn’t matter. I’ve been here for three years, and she’s never needed me once.”

Inside, the decor matched him to a T. Everything was grays and blacks with every shade of those colors represented. The furnishings were sparse, but the place was neat as a pin. “You have a great place.”

He looked around like it was the first time he’d been there. “Thanks. It’s just somewhere to live. It’s never felt like home before.”

“Before what,” I asked while trailing my finger down a chaise lounge that just begged me to take a long nap on it.

“Before you. It’s not so bad with you here.”

I gasped quietly. “Do you mean that?”

He chuckled and took me into his arms. “Of course I do. You are exhausted. Did you want to take my bed and I’ll take the couch?”

I was wanting something just out of reach. And a little scary. I wanted him, I wanted the whole night, but exhaustion dragged at my heels and after some kisses and caresses, I let him tuck me in and leave me alone. And I was just tired enough to fall asleep.

Chapter Seventeen

“Good morning, Endymion! We are so excited you called!” My mom answered first then was joined by my dad on the extension. Yes, they still had a landline.

“Morning! How are you both?”

I listened for a while as they both droned on about how mundane their life was. They asked me a million questions about school and boys. I told them about both but left names out to protect the innocent or the not-so innocent after what happened the night before.

Then I got to the meat of the call. “Well, I’m glad you asked about school because one of the teachers said something that threw me off.”

They both paused for a minute but asked me to explain. I told them about the whole thing, how Maeve said I came from warriors, how the librarian confirmed my family history was in a special place, and how someone helped me look but we found nothing.

My mom cleared her throat. “That’s because those records are probably beyond the veil. That’s the safest place for them. The librarian is probably under the impression they are in Titania’s office, but they never have been and never will be. Sometimes we like to bury things we don’t understand.”

“I don’t understand. That makes it sound like I come from the enemy or something. Why can’t I go there? Meet my grandparents. Find out who I am. Instead, I’m here learning about fairy porn lore and shooting arrows into a fucking hay bale!” I screamed out the frustration but then apologized to them for my language. It wasn’t their fault. Not really.

My father laughed. “Fairy porn lore. That’s actually a pragmatic way to put it.” He stopped speaking for a moment. “And there are things to learn at Sciathain Academy, Endy. It will be better once you get your wings. I know it’s difficult to be the one standing out in the crowd, but once they arrive, you will...well, all the things you’re learning now will come into play.”

I snorted. “Like the porn?”

He laughed loudly. “Not that. I’m getting off the phone if we have to talk about that.”

“It calls to me,” I admitted, not wanting to keep anything else from them.
