“We would travel on foot for weeks.”

“We will use my jewelry and purchase horses along the way.”

“You would need to wear something different.”

He nodded at my silver dress.

“I have more clothes than there is sand on the beach. I shall find something more modest.”

“And you would have to listen to me—do as I say.”

That one didn’t sit well with me, but I wasn’t about to say anything now that he was so close to agreeing.

“We will find a way to get along,” I said.

Sarolf frowned, scratched his chin once more, then sighed loudly.

“Meet me behind the stables in twenty minutes. Bring only what you absolutely need—and payment, of course.”

I jumped forward, almost to embrace him for a hug. He looked at me in surprise but didn’t step away. Blushing, I stepped back again.

A feeling of excitement took hold of me.As terrible as my situation was, I couldn’t help but feel like I was going on an adventure. Like princesses in those fairy tales Frida used to tell me when I was a child. Would I get to see a witch? A dragon? Elegant elves in the forest? Me, leaving the castle without escort and my father. Sarolf watched me with a strange smile on his face.

“You seem cheerful for someone who is fleeing into poverty from unimaginable riches.”

“It will be temporary. But yes, this has a certain excitement to it.”

“It can be quite dangerous.” His face grew serious again, as if he was waiting for me to back out.

I paid him no attention. I was going on an adventurous journey with a “beggar and his awful sister.”

“What?” Sarolf asked.

Fool, you said that out loud.

“Nothing, I will see you in twenty minutes behind the stables,” I said.
