Chapter 29

Iwas lying in my bed awake, staring at the ceiling, listening to the crackling of the fire. I had only slept for a couple of hours before tossing and turning until somewhere around midnight. The thought of announcing my engagement made me nervous, even a little nauseous. At the same time, I couldn’t wait to be with Alrick again. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. His smile, his eyes, his gentle touch, the feel of his body on mine.

A knock at my door startled me.

“Mina? It’s Alrick.” His voice was low and soft.

I rushed to the door and opened it. He had bathed and changed into a fresh shirt and pants, his sword hanging at his side. I grabbed his hand and pulled him inside as he pulled me into his arms, closing the door behind us with his food. We kissed as if we were starving for one another.

“By the gods, is this actually happening?” he asked, pulling away to cup my face with his hands.

I grinned like a little girl, overwhelmed with joy. “I don’t know. It seems surreal.”

He smiled back at me, then brushed his lips against mine.

“Tomorrow, I shall get your father’s approval. I won’t stop until I have it. I swear it!”

I tilted my head. “You didn’t speak with him on your way here?”

“Very few words were exchanged on the way.”

I laughed. “Men...”

“What do you mean?”

“He told me in the entrance hall that he approves of you.”

Alrick looked puzzled. “How does he know?”

I shrugged. “He is no fool. And he knows”—I ran my finger over Alrick’s scar, then kissed him—“what love looks like,” I whispered against his lips.

Alrick moaned as his kisses grew more passionate.

“Wait,” I said, pulling away. “Henrike...will she recover?”

Alrick nodded and kissed the side of my neck. “She is already halfway herself, was bossing me around the moment she woke.”

I giggled, then moaned as Alrick’s hand found my breast and gently massaged it. I took his hand to lead him to my bed when somebody knocked at the door. We both froze like children caught stealing cookies.

“Your Highness, I thought I heard a noise. Is anything the matter?” Frida asked.

I cleared my throat. “No, Frida, nothing is the matter.”

“Good,” she said, opening the door wide. She glanced at Alrick, then gave me a scolding look. Alrick and I let go of one another, and I put a few steps between us.

“All eyes will be on Her Highness from now on. It is of the utmost importance to stick to royal protocols.”

She ignored Alrick as if he wasn’t even in the room.

Throwing me an apologetic glance, he cleared his throat and gave me a bow. “Your Highness, we shall continue this conversation at a later point.”

“Yes, Lord Wilbrandt,” I said.

Frida stepped aside to make room for Alrick’s departure.

“According to protocol, any conversations between Her Highness and her fiancé shall be with a maid present until the conclusion of the marriage,” Frida said, crossing her arms.

“Of course,” Alrick said.
