“Where to next?” she said, still holding her smile.

“Home, I’m afraid. I have that dinner with the CEO tonight. I can’t miss it.” The smile on his face slowly faded, replaced by a huge gasp of breath. “The future of my employees depends on it.”

“Of course.” Isabella placed a hand on his shoulder. “You’ll do great.” Liam nodded, but the smile on his face refused to come back. “What is it?” she asked, noticing it.

“Nothing. It’s just… I almost forgot about tonight. The most important moment of my life.” He turned the keys as the car roared into life.

“Oh… I’m sorry. I take up all your time.”

“No, no, that’s not it.” He shook his head, placing his hand on hers before she could pull it away. “It’s more like, I don’t know how to explain it, but when you’re around, it’s like nothing else matters. Even the worst seems bearable.” His gaze melted her heart. Feeling his warm hand on her skin made her want to slip her fingers into his, locking them in place. Nothing seemed impossible when he was with her. He would do everything for her. Now it was time to do something for him.

“That CEO tonight, what sort of a man is he?”

He seemed a bit surprised by that question. “What sort of a man? Rich prick wants to be richer type. Why?” Isabella slowly nodded her head in approval.

“Entitled?”

“Absolutely.”

“Is he used to others doing whatever he demands without questioning him, no matter what?”

“Yep. Why?” Liam’s face was now curious and amused.

“Let me come with you tonight.” Liam tilted his head sideways. He thought about it for a second.

“These people are my kind of people. Please believe me when I tell you that they only understand one language.”

“Which is?”

“Status.” Unwelcome memories of the shallow and despicable behaviors of high society came rushing back to her. Flashbacks of a life that she was once a part of. Her own family, one of England’s finest, had helped set the very tone that would divide her country into classes and oppress the poor. Once again, she felt ashamed of herself, just like when she'd first got to know Dan and learned what life was like on the other end of the stick. For a moment, her eyes were lost, wondering how Dan was doing.

“And you wouldn’t mind?” His voice tore her out of her thoughts.

“Are you jesting? All day you have been driving me through town on the ridiculous notion that I time traveled here from 1881. This is the very least I could do. Please let me help you.” Liam pondered deeply about this plan of hers which was still left uncertain.

“Well, if you really don’t mind… It kind of makes sense what you’re saying. And I’m at a loss on how to deal with this guy anyway. I was actually worried I might lose my temper with him. Having you around could actually help.” Her face lit up. It filled her with joy that she was finally able to repay his kindness for the first time ever—definitely not including the lethal dinner she’d tried to make.

“Splendid.” Liam nodded in satisfaction over what was to come. “In that case, we have to make a quick stop.”

“Where to?”

“The mall. You need a dress that suits a modern lady. And don’t even try to talk me out of it again, you basically already agreed.” He smiled at her.

A warm tingle was now added to the joy that was already rushing through her body. There was no way out of it. She just had to go along with it as she gave him a warm smile in reply. “If you insist.”
