“Yeah, you’re not talking out your ass, are you?” Barrett jested, and I held my hand up to my mouth, stifling a laugh.

“I’m serious. Just don’t fuck it up,” Connor warned in that dominant tone that did something to my insides.

“I didn’t think you’d be this cool.” There was a pause and some movement before she added, “Thank you, we’ve always been close, but this means the world to me.”

“Truth be told, I really don’t think you would have stayed away from him if I hadn’t given you my blessing.”

“Probably not,” Lourde said.

“It means the world to me that you can find it in your heart to be happy for us, Connor.”

An insect flew from outside the window, scaring the bejesus out of me. I jerked quickly, my hand connecting with the art on his console, sending it flying to the floor.

I held my breath, pulling up more still than a statue.

“What was that?” Lourde asked.

Oh fuck, fuck, fuck.

“Nothing. I’ve just got the window open.” Connor’s tone was clipped. The sound of footsteps made me jerk back, uncertain if someone was coming.

“Anyway, I’m glad you guys are happy, and we shared this moment. It’s been great, but I really have to get back to work. Alfred wants me to present tomorrow being Monday with the board, so I’d really appreciate it if we might organize a lunch this week, or I’ll see you at the ball on Saturday.”

“Sure thing, buddy,” Barrett said.

Footsteps followed and weren’t as pronounced as if they were walking away. Hopefully, it meant they were moving toward the elevators.

Oh, thank God.

“Is someone here?” Lourde asked.

Shit!I held my breath.

“No,” Connor asserted as he banged the call button four or five times in quick succession.

“There is, Isn’t there?” Lorde asked. “Who is she?”

Hell no.

“No one,” Connor said.

The doors pinged open.

Go inside. Please!

“I’ll see you on Saturday. Be good to her,” Connor said in his serious tone.

“Always,” Barrett said.

“And you be good to whoever is in there.” Lourde let out a giggle.

“I’m working now. Would you just go already!” Connor said, with a slight inflection in his tone.

“Bye, brother, love you.”

The doors pinged close, and I released the breath I was holding, slightly dizzy from holding it in for so long.

“You can come out now, Pepper… if you dare.” His voice had an edge, which I was all too familiar with.
