He sat down and picked up the menu.

Doubt lingered in my mind. Doubtheput there by cheating on me with another woman after our year together.

“What were you working on?” I questioned. I had never asked him about his work before, so I watched him for any telltale signs that he was not telling the truth.

“Bit of this and that. I was in my strategy meeting when it ran over, though,” he said, eyeballing the menu.

“Uh-huh.” I huffed out. The server appeared, and we placed our order.

I reached for my wine when Jake’s hand wrapped around mine. “I’m so glad we are doing this.” His blue eyes met mine.

“Me too,” I admitted.

“Maybe this can be the start of something fresh.”

“Yes, a fresh start.”I need that. I needed to forget Connor Diamond.

“I want that with you, Pepper.”

The server appeared. “Ah,he’sarrived. What can I get you?”

I think the server felt sorry for me, giving me my third Chianti on the house because she thought I was being stood up.Sweetheart.

Jake looked at me, then to the server, trying to dissect the girl code between us.

“I’ll just have a red wine.”

“Would you like to pick one from the list, sir? We have loads to pick from,” she said, directing him to the backside of the menu.

“Do you want me to pick you one?” I offered, but he let out an exasperated huff, ignoring me, and scanned the menu.

I offered the waitress a meek, apologetic smile.

A shriek pulled my attention away from Jake as a tall, thin woman walked toward me.

“Look who’s here!” Francesca exclaimed, the entire restaurant turning toward the commotion.

I looked behind her, and there he stood, a serious expression across his blue eyes, still in his suit from work.

His blue eyes hit mine with an intensity that sent butterflies in my stomach to wake up from their slumber.

Fuck me.

“Francesca, hi!” I offered, meeting her enthusiasm.

“And this must be your boyfriend Lourde told me about.”

“Jake,” Jake volunteered, standing up immediately.

The server moved away, and Jake stood, staring at the beauty in front of him. In a tight dress, she left little to the imagination—breasts pushed to the sun and a tight-fitting short terracotta-colored dress that showed off her pencil-thin legs.

“Well, aren’t you handsome?” she said, pulling him in for an air kiss.

Connor appeared beside Francesca, staring at me like I’d done something wrong. Staring at me like he wanted to punish me by handcuffing me to the wall and doing bad things to me. I’d seen that look before, and I caved under his stare.

“Connor,” I said, breaking the awkwardness between us.

He pulled me in for a tight embrace, his hands falling around the shell of my hip and squeezing me ever so gently. His lips dusted my cheek, awfully close to my mouth.
