“Don’t you dare!” I snapped at him. “Don’t feel sorry for me. I’m allowed to feel... whatever the hell I’m feeling, but just stop with the pity, okay?”

He opened his arms and I sighed again, deeply, before crawling onto his lap.

“I’m sorry my pack were such dicks,” he whispered into my hair.

I buried my head in the crook of his shoulder and inhaled deeply, loving the smell of him. Woodsy and sweet, yet a little bit sweaty. All male.

The front door suddenly burst open and I sat up, staring at a guy I’d never seen before.

“What’s wrong, Caleb?” Xander asked, walking with seeming calm over to the wide-eyed stranger.

“The Alpha’s back! Your dad said to come find you immediately.”

I jumped off Kyle’s lap as Xander turned to stare at me. I knew that look. We had to obey the summons.

“Should we all go?” I asked, glancing at Kyle and Michael.

Xander frowned, his brow furrowing. “Maybe just you and me. The Alpha’s not exactly the most social guy anymore. Four people barging in probably wouldn’t do him any good.”

“I’m happy to stay here,” Michael said from his spot at the table.

“Okay. I’ll stay too,” Kyle agreed, though his tone indicated he’d rather come with us. “But if you need me, Xander, send word. I’ll be there.”

Xander nodded, as I said, “We’ll come straight back to get you.” I turned to press my lips to Kyle’s in reassurance. I knew my wolf didn’t like being left behind.

Xander pulled on my hand and, with a final smile at my warlock and Beta wolf, I followed Xander and Caleb out the door.

“Where is the Alpha?” Xander asked Caleb.

“He’s at your father’s place. Eating.”

“How long’s he been away for?” I asked Xander. The guys were walking so fast I had to run to keep up.

“This time? Two or three weeks,” Xander answered. “He only usually comes into town around the time of the full moon, then heads off again. Some months, he doesn’t turn up at all.”

“Then he’s early this month,” I said, my heart pounding as I hurried alongside them. “Full moon’s not till next week.”

Or it wasn’t in my world, anyway. Did we have the same sun and moon, or was my realm completely different? I realized I had no idea about that.

The guys didn’t say anymore, just continued to powerwalk down the street and up to a large, two-story family home.

Xander marched right up to the front door, opened it and went straight in.

I hesitated on the porch, where Caleb was standing.

“You’d better go in,” hHe said, stepping forward to hold the door open for me.

I nodded and swallowed hard. I wasn’t sure why, but after hearing the stories of the Alpha and his lost love, I was super nervous. I began to sweat and my stomach clenched tight.

“Um...”

“It’s okay,” Caleb said with a sweet smile. “Not all of us hate you guys. I’m actually relieved that I might actually have a fated mate out there.”

I turned to look properly at the guy who’d come to fetch us. He was younger than my men, maybe nineteen or twenty. He was all long arms and legs and now sported a huge grin.

“I’m positive you have a mate out there somewhere, Caleb,” I said. “Thank you.” Then I mentally pulled up my big girl knickers and stepped inside the house.

Xander’s mom was hovering near the door, waiting for me. “There you are,” Tania said as she gestured down the hallway. “They’re waiting for you in the kitchen.”
