She suddenly reached out and grabbed my hand and I jumped a little at the heat in her palms. All the shifters seemed to run hot, and were more touchy-feely than I was used to.

She led me into a large yet cozy kitchen, with wooden cabinets and counter tops.

In the center of the room was a round table where a large man sat with a veritable feast of food before him. He was eating a steak and seemed to have already consumed most of the potatoes, pie and bread in front of him.

“Alpha.” Xander greeted the man with his head slightly bowed. “This is Monique. My mate.”

The Alpha finally stopped shoveling food into his mouth and looked up. His dark hair was long, hanging past his shoulders. He seemed to still be wet, probably from a shower, his shirt clinging to him in patches.

“Hello,” I managed, and waved a little because I was at a loss of what else to do.

The Alpha straightened in his chair and pushed his hair out of the way so he could really look at me.

I had the urge to bow my head, like Xander had done, but I forced myself not to. This was the guy who had ruined his own pack’s future, and didn’t even seem to care about that fact.

His face was heavily lined, but his eyes were as sharp and keen as a hawk’s, their color a piercing blue like Xander’s.

“So, this is the witch who’s going to save us all?”

I blinked at him and tried not to let my jaw drop. Of all the things I’d expected him to say, that was not it. And especially not in that derisive tone.

Xander reached out and put his arm around my waist, pulling me into his body. “She’s my fated mate. We have no idea what it means for the pack.”

I glanced up at him and smiled in thanks for his support.

“Your father tells me you found a warlock who once knew Genevieve.” The Alpha directed his words at Xander.

His voice was strange, tight and crackly. Probably rusty from lack of use.

Xander answered. “Yes, we did. The high warlock of Monique’s realm claimed that Genevieve was his sister, and that he hadn’t seen her in thirty years.”

The Alpha nodded, his lips thinning to a hard line. “So... what do you want from me, Xander?”

Perhaps some leadership? I was getting more than a little ticked off with this guy. Did he have any thoughts or feelings he wanted to share?

“I want... I don’t want anything, Alpha. I’ve got my mate. It’s the rest of the pack who need your help.”

The Alpha didn’t seem to react. If anything, he became even more dismissive in his manner, glancing out the nearby window as if he couldn’t care less about what Xander had just said.

Enough already.I cleared my throat. “Um, excuse me. But aren’t you at all interested in the fact that we might be the solution to your pack’s problem?”

The Alpha glared at me like I was the problem. “And what exactly is our supposedproblem, witch?”

Yep. There it was.He had a hatred of my kind, no doubt because of his experience with Genevieve.

I stepped away from Xander, put both hands on my hips and glared down at the big bully. “You listen here.Alpha.” I spat the title out with as much derision as he’d shown me and Xander. “Every single man in this pack wants a wife, children, family. Thanks to you screwing with a very powerful witch, they’re all cursed. Your fault. Not theirs.Youmight have given up on life, but your pack has not. And as their leader, shameon you for not caring about that.”

Gasps sounded around the room as Xander and his parents reacted.Too bad. This man was not showing leadership qualities. I crossed my arms over my chest and added, “And don’t even think of attacking me. I might not look like much, but you don’t want to test my magic.”

Truth be known,Ididn’t want to test my magic at the moment either. I was so much weaker outside of the realm where I’d grown up, but if the Alpha tried to hurt me, or Xander, I still likely had enough strength to knock him halfway across town.

The Alpha’s eyebrows rose, and then he began to laugh. Really laugh. Like he had no control over the sound that bubbled out of him. He slapped his hand on the table.

I glanced over at Xander whose eyebrows were kinked. He shrugged as if perplexed, so we all just waited for the Alpha to stop his chuckling.

When he finally did, I raised my eyebrows at him. “You’re amused by the fact your pack will soon die out because you pissed off a witch powerful enough to curse hundreds of people?”

He sobered quickly and shook his head. “No. Not at all. I’m just... No-one’s spoken to me like that in such a long time.” He sighed. “You sound like Genevieve. She didn’t take anyone’s shit either.”
