I let go of his hand and walked onto the grass, pressing my hand down onto the earth and closing my eyes. The memories on this land were generally happy and content. There had been tears shed here, a baby lost. But the generations of wolves that had walked here had been good people, and their overarching joy shone through.

I opened my eyes and got to my feet. “I think this is the perfect spot for our home, Xander.”

There was a large tree about a hundred feet away and, as I walked toward it, a vision came to me. Of my child climbing its branches, laughter on the air.

Tears sprang to my eyes at how real it all felt and my hand moved to cover my flat stomach. I’d grow babies in my womb one day and they would be healthy and strong. But which of my men would be around to raise them?

The fear of what I’d seen in my future vision still haunted me. Would I lose Xander, or Michael? Both of them?

Xander came up behind me, his hand sliding around my waist. “What do you see here?”

I inhaled sharply and twisted in his arms so that I could face him and cup his beloved face in my hands. “I see our children playing. I feel laughter and joy. We need to keep this tree.”

Xander’s face lit up with a grin. “Done. What sort of house do you see?”

I chuckled at his exuberance, and described the home I’d already seen in my vision. “Double story and white, with big windows that look out in that direction,” I pointed toward the rolling hills, “and lots of bathrooms.”

Xander smiled and took my hand, dragging me back to the road. “Let’s go home and catch up Kyle and Michael. I’m sure they’re worried about what happened with the Alpha.”

I nodded and held his hand again as he walked us back to the cottage.

My heart was full with happiness, but also heavy with worry. There were so many obstacles to climb. Many I couldn’t see. But there would be darkness, and sorrow. I couldn’t change that. It was the only way forward.

I knew it now.

When we got back to the cottage, Michael was scowling and pacing around the tiny living room.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, rushing over to check on him.

He threw his hands up in the air. “My magic is crap.”

I laughed. “Yeah... I know. But I thought you would have gotten used to it since you lived in the human world for so long.”

He growled like one of the wolves. “There’s something different here. I feel even more drained than I did in other parts of this human world. It’s fucking frustrating.”

I sighed and took his hand. “Wanna hear about how I yelled at the Alpha?”

He laughed, the tension in his face dissipating. “Yeah, sure.”

I led him and Kyle to the couches and Xander and I regaled our story. They laughed and I grinned, but beneath it all, my fear was building.

Tania had told me at the meeting yesterday that any man who mated outside of the pack, never fathered a live baby.

What if that happened to us?

What if my future visions were nothing more than dreams I desperately wanted to be true?
