But she was right. That would only incite matters, not improve them. So, for now, I would do as she asked. I took a couple of slow, deep breaths, and then began to recite the plans for the family home.

We finished dinner and went to bed early, where I made love to Monique until she screamed with ecstasy, and all felt as if it was right with the world.

Our world. In our home, in our hearts.

Out the front door, not so much.

Chapter 8.

Kyle.

The weeks began to meld together with the normal roll on of time. I worked on the house every day, sometimes with Xander, other days by myself. Things were coming together well and it gave me a great sense of pride to be building our mate a home. It was something I’d been dreaming about since I was young.

Xander had been asked to join the council for regular meetings. He spent a portion of everyday with them, in official meetings at the town hall and around the pack lands. The high warlock had not surfaced in any form, and I was beginning to feel safer with the knowledge he might not come after us the way we’d first expected him to.

This morning over breakfast I leaned in to kiss Monique, only to notice the pallor in her cheeks and that her scent had changed.

I pulled back and stared at her, “Are you okay, sweetheart? You’re not looking like yourself.”

She grimaced out a smile, then covered her mouth with her hand as she burped strangely, almost like she was going to throw up.

She swallowed hard, gulping audibly. “Yeah, I’m okay. Just feeling a little sick in the stomach. Some sort of bug going around probably.”

I doubted that, since wolf shifters rarely got sick, but only she’d know how she felt.

“You guys want me to hang around today?” I asked Michael and Monique, who were both in the kitchen. Xander had left already for the day.

“Nah, we’re fine.” Michael said, walking up to put his arms around her waist.

Monique leaned into him, closing her eyes for a moment as though to savor his touch.

A rush of anxiety pulsed through me. Xander and I really hadn’t spent enough time with Monique recently. I’d been too concerned with the house and getting that done for her. Michael had stayed with her at the cottage, every day.

“Do you two wanna come see the house?” I asked suddenly, struck by the idea and not wanting to leave them alone anymore. “I’m sure you’re curious about how it’s looking.”

Monique’s face lit up. “Yes! I’d love to. Just let me grab my water bottle.”
