I sighed and put the book down, resting my head on the back of the couch. “Lots of reasons to be honest. The pack, the curse. Xander. Then of course there’s the future visions that showed me our babies, but also showed me...”

I stopped, not wanting to say the words aloud.

“Showed you what?” Michael prompted.

I blinked rapidly as hot tears filled my eyes. “I saw darkness. Death. I saw you and Xander hurt. I just... I’m so scared of the future, Michael. I’m not sure which way to turn.”

Michael sighed heavily and my heart cracked a little for him. He was as sad and worried as I was. Though somehow I felt the weight on him seemed heavier.

I reached out and squeezed his arm. “Tell me about you. What’s going on?”

He didn’t look up, just continued to stare down at my feet. “I don’t like it here. The people are horrible, and they don’t accept us. Probably never will. I can’t leave you, and I don’t have anywhere else to go. Not after what I did to my father.”

He sounded totally lost, and worst of all, trapped.

I chewed on my bottom lip for a moment then asked softly, “What do you think is happening with your dad now? Do you think he’s given up on getting the wolves? Are we safe?”

It had been almost a month since we’d run from our home. And even though we hadn’t seen hide nor hair of anyone from the magic realm since that first night, I wasn’t sure how safe we really were.

“I don’t think he’d give up on that magic.” Michael said. “It’s possible he’s moved onto other sources, other shifters maybe. But I’m terrified, to be honest. About what’s going on back there. With my mother. Our people.”

I nodded slowly, thinking over his words. We weren’t a close-knit coven. Most of the families were solitary, and although I had friends there, I didn’t really miss anyone.

“Do you want to do a scrying spell?” I asked him, thinking of ways to alleviate his worries. “Or do you think it’s too dangerous?”

“Too dangerous?” He repeated, looking up at me.. “Because my dad might be watching us?”

I nodded, “Yeah... and, you know.” I gestured in the direction of my waist and belly.

Michael’s eyes widened, then a smile kicked up the edge of his mouth. “I hadn’t thought about that. Maybe we should wait then. Or maybe you should find out for certain? What do you think?”

I stared at him, noting the happiness in his eyes.

Finally, I nodded. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

Michael clapped his hands and gently set my legs aside before getting to his feet. “Okay. So, how do we do this? Magically? Or...”

I laughed, enjoying the feeling of the happiness inside my chest replacing the fear and anxiety that had been there before. “I don’t know. I’ve never had to do one before.”

I considered asking Xander’s mom, but quickly squashed that idea. Even though Tania had been nice enough to me, she certainly hadn’t taken me in or tried to protect me from the pack politics.

She was the lead Beta’s mate, and would back him and the council’s decisions no matter what. Though, I did wonder if a grandchild would change how she felt about me.

I grabbed Michael’s hand. “I saw some pregnancy tests at the general store when we went shopping last time. Do you think you could... magic one here?” I didn’t like the idea of stealing, but I didn’t want anyone in the pack seeing us buy one either.

Michael grinned, closed his eyes and clicked his fingers.

A box fell into my hand and I squealed as I stared down at it. He’d known exactly what I wanted, and gotten it for me. I hugged the box to my chest and stared up at the man who would have been my high warlock, my husband, if we’d stayed in the magical realm. “How do you feel about this, Michael?”

He cocked a single eyebrow at me. “Specifically...?”

“About... being a father. About the baby, me. Everything.”

Michael cupped my face in the softest way and stared down into my eyes. “I love you.” He said, and I had to swallow the sob that rose.

I never got used to hearing it.

“I love the idea of your belly growing large with our baby. He... or she, will be magnificent.”
