“If we go away for a few weeks, would you come?” Monique asked. “I really do need a break after everything that’s happened and what’s gone on here.”

“What do you mean?” Xander asked.

I groaned. “Are you serious? Don’t you ever listen? Monique and I are stuck here. We have little to no powers and are shunned by your entire pack. We haven’t even been asked to work on the curse, or do anything to help you guys. Your council is too busy covering up the fact that you found your mate.”

Xander frowned and pulled Monique closer to him. “You’re right.”

“I.... what?” Not what I’d expected him to say.

“You’re right. We should go away, a short vacation. And while we’re away I’ll have the council come up with a plan for releasing the betas onto the world. They have to feel confident that they can go and find a mate.”

I nodded. “What about us?”

Xander met my gaze. “We get out house finished so our mate and baby have a house to come home to.”

“And the pack’s anger towards us?”

Xander’s lip curled up on one side. “Fuck ‘em. Plus, once I tell everyone Monique’s pregnant, there will be a shift. Let’s get you guys out there. I’ll get my sister on side, and my mother, they’ll be able to change people’s minds.”

“Why didn’t you do that before?” Monique asked, looking up at him.

Xander sighed. “Because I’m an idiot. I’ve been so busy just trying to keep the council at bay, and trying to convince the alpha to find the witch to break the curse...”

“You think she’s still alive?” I asked, surprised by that turn of events.

Xander nodded and looked directly at me. “I do. And I would have asked you for help, but your magic has to be saved, in case you need it to protect Monique. I’ve kinda been counting on that.”

I tilted my head to the side and shifted in my seat. “What do you mean?”

Xander frowned at me as though I should know what he was talking about. “I mean... what I said. Kyle and I will probably die going up against the high warlock if it comes to a fight. But you can use your magic and whisk her out of here and to somewhere safe, can’t you?”

I nodded, my throat thickening with emotion. “Yeah. I can.” Wouldn’t be easy with my current power levels being so low, but in a dangerous situation, I’d lay down my life for my wife as well.

Xander shrugged. “Well, that’s why I haven’t been asking you to do anything else. You’re the last line of defense as far as I’m concerned. I don’t really expect to get out of that fight alive.”

“Me neither.” Kyle admitted.

“Don’t say that.” Monique said, “I can’t lose you. Either of you.”

Xander just kissed her, effectively silencing her words.

I sat back and absorbed everything that had been said. Was it really true that the wolves were counting on me to save their mate? Then I had to start training, and find a way to boost my magic in case it was needed.

My father was souped up on dark magic, and in my heart of hearts I was also afraid that if I came to a fight between him and me, I’d die too. Then who would save Monique and our child?
