“But we want to!” Came the cries from the back of the room.
Xander stood up and I gaped at him. He wasn’t going to take his father’s side, was he?
“You don’t understand, Dad.” He said and I covered my gasp with my hand. Nope, he wasn’t taking his father’s side in this. “You met your mate when you were a teenager. You were married by twenty-one. I felt like I had a hole in my chest for almost ten years.” He thumped his sternum with his fist.
Max gripped the podium tightly, almost as though he was attempting to control his temper. “Xander, there is no guarantee that any of the men in this room will ever find their mate. And you’re wrong to encourage them so.”
“But Monique’s pregnant...”
“And there’s no way to know if she’ll survive the labor.” His father snapped back. “Monique could die. Both her, and your child.”
Chapter 12.
Monique.
My jaw dropped.What did he just say?
“Dad...” Xander growled loudly in warning, his hands tightening into fists beside him.
I stared up at the stage. Had Max just said I would die? That my baby would die?
No. NO!That was impossible.
“It’s true. I’m sorry Monique.” Max met my gaze, his eyes hard and dark, and without the worry I’d expected to see.
Then he turned to address the pack. “No woman who’s fallen pregnant to any of our wolves of this generation, has ever lived past the point of her baby’s birth. The woman has miscarried early or died in childbirth, along with her child.”
I covered my mouth with both hands to stop the sob from escaping.
Somewhere in my mind I’d known that to be true. They’d told me. But in all honesty, I’d never thought it had applied to me. I was their fated mate after all.
But hearing the curse put so bluntly, was horrific. So... direct and applied to me. I didn’t know how to cope with the eruption of feeling in my core.
My body did though.
I felt the surge too late. I raced to the corner of the room and grabbed the wastepaper basket, managing to catch what little I ate of my lunch.
