Chapter Eight

Steve’s last sentence kept a smile on her face and peace in her heart until she reached home. He considered himself an idiot for not dating her earlier. How sweet!

“See you tomorrow, one o’clock,” she called to Steve as she left his car.

Reassured about their growing relationship, she waited for Greg and set a nice table especially for him. Although in his late twenties, her big boy loved to see his mom fussing about for him.

He arrived home twenty minutes after she did and pulled her into a bear hug. “Missed you, Mom.”

She knew he was too busy to miss her, but she delighted in his show of affection. “I’ll bet you must be hungry.”

“Starved. Give me a minute to change, and I’ll be right with you.” He headed to his bedroom and returned half an hour later, in sweatpants and a t-shirt, his hair wet. “Sorry, took me longer. I decided to shower. It feels so good to be home in my own bedroom.”

She set the various plates on the table and let him help himself, blessing Steve for insisting she keep the boxes. Greg didn’t miss a bite as he told her about his company and his work. He sounded so enthused about his London project.

“For now, they told me I’ll have to stay in London for three to four months, but the project may develop into a long term job. I don’t mind at all. They’re giving me aflat,” he said it with a British twist that made her laugh. “You’ll come to visit.”

“I would love to. How’s Leslie?” He hadn’t mentioned his girlfriend.

“She’s history.”

“Ah, after two years?”

He shrugged. “She wanted to get married, and I’m not ready to commit yet.”

“Not ready at twenty-eight?” What was wrong with the younger generation?

“We decided to go our different ways. I’m heading to England and some British fun.” He chuckled.

Always indulgent toward her smart, hard-working, and cute only son, she smiled at his laid-back attitude.

“How about you, Mom? Anything new in your life, your job?”

“Let’s not talk about my job. It’s good and steady.”

“And probably boring, same thing day after day.”

“But I like it. I like the patients and the staff.”

“Okay, Mom. I’ve had a long day. I’m going to hit the sack.” He removed the dirty plates and rinsed them before setting them in the dishwasher.

“Don’t worry about this, Greg. You go to bed. I’ll finish cleaning. By the way, tomorrow we’re having a guest for lunch, my boss, Dr. Steve Winston, who’s leaving the clinic and hired two young doctors to replace him. I invited him for one p.m.”

“Okay.” Greg didn’t comment for a change. He kissed her cheek with a “Goodnight, Mom.”

In her room, she texted Steve.

Thanks for the food. It was well appreciated and all gone.

He texted back right away.

To be expected in a healthy, young man. I hope you had a good time with him.

Excellent. Sorry, I can’t call you. My walls filter voices like a surgical mask. I can hear Greg chatting with someone.

A girl?

Probably, considering his flirty tone.
