“Huh?… Oh for our first dinner…huh. Not tonight, I’m busy.” He browsed through the calendar on his phone.

Lillian didn’t give him time to check his schedule. “Tomorrow evening after work. Seven o’clock, maybe?”

“Perfect. Thank you, Lillian.”

“Where should I meet you, Dr. Winston?”

“Oh well...” He shrugged. “Any special place where you’d like to eat?”

“Yes. At the Montgomery Inn, theBoathouseon the Ohio River. I’ll make the reservations,” she hastened to add.

“Good idea. I’ll pick you up at six-thirty.”

“I can meet you there. No need for you—”

“I’m old school, Lillian.” Dismissing the subject, he waved a hand. “See you at six-thirty at your house.”

“Thank you, Dr. Winston.”

“Thank you, Lillian.” His gaze settled on her, curious and disturbing.

She’d taken him by surprise. He probably hadn’t known what to make of her unexpected urge to go to dinner with him. Her head reeling from her accomplishment, she headed to the nurses’ break room for a strong cup of coffee.

Heidi arrived a minute later. “I saw you leaving Steve’s office. What happened?”

Lillian summarized her meeting.

“Good job. I’m proud of you.” Heidi hugged her. “The ball is in your court now. Make the best of it. Sexy dress, stilettos, hair down, no glasses. The whole shebang that makes a man drool. Take a day off tomorrow and work on it.”

“No way, I’ll be here as usual. I don’t want him to think I’m sick and cancel dinner. I may leave early though to visit the hairdresser.”

“Okay but remember, it’s the first impression that counts.”
