Impressed with the neatness of the new place, Lillian scanned and admired the waiting room, the reception and registration counters and desks, the various examination rooms, the doctors’ offices, the outpatient operating room, the adjacent laboratory, and the pharmacy.

“It’ll be a pleasure working here.”

“We hope to open and start seeing patients within a month. By then, we’ll have an experienced staff in place, too.”

“The only things missing are the drugs and other supplies,” the contractor said.

“It’ll be your job to place the orders, interview the candidates, and hire the staff, Lillian. A lot of work,” Steve mused.

“But so exciting,” she replied, pleased with his vote of confidence.

They followed the contractor around the hotel where the remodeling had just started. They ate dinner at the newly painted and decorated restaurant, enjoyed an iced coffee next door at the coffee shop, and ambled back to the rowboat.

“Do we get to have an after-dinner drink on your favorite deck?” Lillian asked, an expectant smile on her face.

“First, we change into something more comfortable.”

“Okay.” She had the perfect thing to wear under the stars. “Pick me up in five minutes. I don’t want to get lost in your galley.”

He burst out laughing and followed her.

She changed into a short, pink, satin nighty, brushed her hair, and sprayed a whiff of perfume on her throat. “I’m ready.”

“You’re even lovelier than in my fantasies.”

With a hand on her back, he led her to the stairs and up to the top deck with its chairs and a settee facing the black ocean, small tables affixed to the floor on each side of it, and a cabinet forming a bar.

“Make yourself comfortable.”

She dropped onto the lounger and extended her bare feet.

“Grand Marnier?”

“Perfect.”

He poured the drinks, handed her a glass, and sat next to her.

Lifting his glass, he smiled wickedly. “To us. May we always be at each other’s beck and call.”

She burst out laughing. He’d managed to erase her doubts. They sipped their liqueur, and she snuggled against him, kissing and making love in the most romantic setting on earth, under a sky carpeted with stars, facing the black ocean spotted with white caps.

Later, he tugged her down to the master bedroom, and she slept like a baby, rocked by the gentle waves, her first night on the yacht forever etched in her memory.
