“He’s part of the past I’m trying to forget.”

“Ah, is he one of the men who taught you a tough lesson in life?”

“He and his son. But I owed them. He took care of me when I was very sick, gave me a job, and paid for my schooling when I was penniless.”

“And he took advantage of you in exchange for his generosity?” His cold fury underlined his words.

“Not him. His son, Dr. Cody Mason. Cody was a resident training with his father. And I was the idiot who was so grateful for their help and still believed in Mother Goose and fairy tales. After the first time he slept with me, I thought he was going to tell me he was falling in love the way I was. Instead, he said I was hotter than any girl he’d been with.”

“Scumbag,” Rafael growled, “and then?”

“Do you want the whole story?”

“If possible, and then we’ll never discuss it again.”

“All right. Cody was a smart one, and he had a way with words, showering me with compliments about my performance in the clinic, my sense of humor, and my beauty. Every part of my face and body was warmed by his flattering remarks. Butsubtly, he reminded me that he’d always supported and helped me. Get the idea?” she snapped. “I never said no. On the one hand I was in love with him and hoped he would end up marrying me. On the other, I felt I owed them a lot and convinced myself that I was repaying my debt in the only way I could. Besides, Cody was good looking and a gentle lover. But he insisted we keep our relationship a secret.”

“What about the father?”

“Dr. Mason took me under his wing from day one. I was his good deed. Apparently, I had the potential to become a good nurse. He paid my tuition to nursing school. I was working, eating, and sleeping at his clinic. That is until he discovered the truth about me and Cody and called me all sorts of names for betraying his trust. I left an hour later while he was locked in his office scolding his son for ruining his future with the wrong girl.”

“What happened to you, to your studies?”

“I had six months to go, so I worked at the school library and at another hospital at night. Finally, I graduated and rented the cheapest apartment in the cheapest neighborhood. It’s called survival, Rafael.” She took a deep breath. “Now dinner is ready. Don’t ever mention this to me again.”

He promised.

Later that night, as they slept in each other’s arms, satiated and happy, he awakened on an antsy thought. Had she slept with him to repay a debt?

Unable to forget the alarming possibility, he shook her.

“Huh, you can’t sleep?” she murmured.

“I have a question for you. A serious one.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Did you sleep with me to repay a debt?”

“Huh? Which debt?” She blinked several times. “Are you crazy?”

“Answer my question.”

“I don’t owe you anything. I got the job at SAMF on my own merit. I’m renting this studio with my own money. I drive my own junky car. What debt?”

“Huh, I don’t know. I was just—”

“You’re just a pompous ass who thinks too much of himself,” she yelled, her eyes blazing with blue fire. The covers had fallen, and her naked breasts bounced with every furious screech. “I don’t owe you a penny.Youowe me for the first rate gourmet meals you eat because my cooking is worth much more than the money you spend on the ingredients.”

“Thank you, love.” He crushed her in his arms and silenced her with kisses and lovemaking.
