“In the basement—with the other decorations.”

“No problem. You and I will bring up the boxes, set up the tree, and hang the decorations.”

“When? Tomorrow?”

“On the weekend?” He glanced at Sienna, seeking help.

“That would be perfect,” the young mother said. “By then, I’ll feel better and will help you.”

“No, Mommy. Dr. Kent and I are doing the tree,” she insisted. “You can sit and watch.”

“Dalia is right.” Tyler approved with a mischievous grin.

“We need lights. Mommy said the lights are burned out.”

“I’ll get some. You’ll have a beautiful tree. Now, go to bed.”

“Thank you, Dr. Kent. You can come and tuck me in.”

Startled, he arched his eyebrows. “In that case, I thinkDr. Kentis a little too formal. Maybe you should just call me Doc.” Calling him Tyler didn’t feel right.

“Like inSnow White. I like that. Doc is my favorite dwarf,” she confided.

He chuckled. Tucking her into bed with her attractive mommy next to her would test his willpower. Too many temptations might drive him to break his promise to himself within minutes.

He scooped up the little girl and tickled her nose. “I’ll take you to bed, and then I have to lie down, too.”

“Can you keep a secret?” she whispered against his ear.

“Sure,” he answered with the same tone.

“I have to tell Santa my Christmas wish.”

“I’ll buy you a Santa Claus doll. We’ll put it in front of the fireplace. You can tell him your wish every day.”

She giggled. “Thanks, Doc. Love you. Goodnight.”

He lowered her to the bed and kissed her forehead.

“Goodnight, pumpkin.”

This sweet girl had wormed her way into his heart and stirred up paternal feelings he’d never expected.
