“I don’t know.”

“It’s not snowing anymore. He can come.”

It wasn’t snowing but the roads must be awfully slippery and dangerous, and he sounded so tired it would be crazy for him to drive in his condition.

“Mommy, tell him to come.”

“On the contrary, I’ll tell him to rest and come whenever he can.”

Afraid to disturb him in case he was asleep again, she texted.

Tyler, please don’t drive if you’re not up to it. Give yourself time to rest. We’ll see you later or in the morning.

Hoping he would follow her advice and take care of himself for a change, she decided to put Dalia to bed.

“Time to go to bed, pumpkin.”

“Not yet. I want to wait for Doc.”

“He may not come tonight. He’s too tired.”

Her phone bleeped. She grabbed it, eager for more news and read.

Don’t worry about me, babe. I’m in good hands. Bev is taking care of me.

Frowning she read and re-read the message, unable to make sense of it. Was Tyler drunk?

No, he would never drink at the hospital. Why was Beverly with him?

A quiver surged through her veins, but she forced herself to type.

Where are you?

The response came right away.

At my apartment with Bev. We needed to clear the air. And we did.

Sienna stared at the words, her heart hammering in her chest, her fingers frozen to the phone.

Everything is back to normal, as it was a week ago. Bev is giving me a gentle and energetic massage, exactly what I need after the long hospital hours.

Damn it, how dare he write to her about his troll and her massage!

Don’t wait for me tonight.

Furious and desperate, Sienna switched off her phone. He could go to hell with his Bev as far as she was concerned.

“What did Doc say, Mommy? When is he coming?”

“He’s not coming. He changed his plans.”

“But I didn’t change my plans,” Dalia yelled. “Tomorrow, we go to his new place and then we do the Christmas tree.”

How could she explain to her sweet pumpkin that Tyler wasn’t coming anymore? The three days spent at the hospital had changed him. He’d forgotten about them and had hooked up with his former girlfriend.

“Now, let’s go to bed.”

She led Dalia to the bedroom but knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep for a single minute.

Last Friday, he’d left his girlfriend to save her. One week later, he’d left her, heart crushed, to return to the girlfriend. She and Dalia had only been a short interlude in his busy life.
