Royce directed his flashlight on the glass panel and opened the door, facing the two laughing officers.

“What are you two doing here?”

“We just came to warn you,” Grant started while Cortez couldn’t stop laughing.

“This is not funny. I’ll complain.”

“We came to tell you—”

“No, tell the old goat to go to hell. It’s my house. He can’t call you every time I’m here.”

Cortez managed to control his amusement “General Clark didn’t call us.”

“Then who?”

“Your father.”

“My father is in the Caribbean, you liars.”

“No, he’s in the front yard.”

“What?”

Officer Grant took a deep breath and shouted. “Dr. Steve Winston and his wife are waiting in their car in the front yard. Got it?”

Royce froze. “Dad’s here?”

“That’s what we’re trying to tell you. When he saw light in the basement, he thought it was suspicious. He called the police station. Luckily, we answered and came to warn you. Should we tell him it’s his son, the black sheep?”

“No. No, don’t, please. We’re leaving right away.”

“Good, and don’t forget the sleeping bag,” Officer Grant said with a new bout of laughter. “By the way, my computer needs fixing. I expect you next week.”

Royce scratched his head nervously. “Sure. Give me a few minutes to leave. Distract them for a moment.”

“Five minutes only.”

“Okay.” He closed the door and locked it. Susan was going to kill him. When he spun toward the room, he heaved a deep breath and released it.

Susan was waiting at the base of the stairs, the sleeping bag rolled under her arm.

“Let’s go,” she said, her voice so calm and relaxed, while his heart hammered in his chest. “You’ll tell me the news in the car.”

They climbed into the car. “Dad and his wife are in the front yard. Duck down until we pass the gate.”

She burst out laughing and crouched on the floor. “This is better than a suspense novel.”

Seething with frustration, he cursed. “Last time you made such an incredible scene, and tonight you’re laughing at it.”

“So funny. Your own dad… Oh my, so funny. He’ll think his black sheep of a son is still a…” She couldn’t stop laughing.

“You can come up now. We’re in the street.”

“Oh my God, Royce, one day I’ll tell Lillian and Brenda this story. They’ll have a blast.”

“I don’t understand you.”

“Last time, it was a big shock. I was terrified I would be discovered and ostracized by my family. Especially, when I realized I forgot my…my…” She started laughing again.
