Since demons typically selected their vampires for specific jobs, she opted to answer with her true employment and the pride that came with her service. “CIA.”

“How long?”

“Fifteen years.” She recognized his rapid-fire questions for the technique’s use in tripping up liars. The truth came much faster to the lips. Good thing she decided against deceit.

“Where’d you work?”

She chanced defiance, mainly because she had made a promise to the U.S. Government, which Lequare accepted, relying on her reputation within the agency. “You’ll have to send in the telepath for the answer. I won’t give that up.”

A small spark of approval flared in his eyes before they shuttered once more.

“Who are you working for now?”

“No one.”

“How do you earn money?”

“I had plenty when I left the company.”

Phillip’s gaze narrowed. “Who are you working with to track the demons from last night?”

She excelled at the physical aspects of the game, but the computer side, not so much. “I pay a company for intelligence I can’t discover on my own.”

“What company?”

“Hebert Security.”

He crossed his arms. “How can you afford them? They’re among the best paranormal agencies in the business.”

“One of them owes me, and they give me a discount.” She wanted to shrug, but the spell wouldn’t allow the movement. Stupid of them to freeze her. A lot could be learned from body language.

He tapped his thigh with his long fingers. Why impatience? “If I release you now, will you attack us?”

“As long as you don’t attack me, I won’t attack you.” That went for mind as well as body.

“Faraday?” He turned to the HP.

Though his brow crinkled with what appeared to be skepticism, he said, “She’s been telling the truth.”

She eyed the older man again, newly wary. Telepathy and a polygraph talent? If so, the man was a rarity.

Questions swirled. Phillip must be rich to afford such a magic-wielder and this HP. Why wasn’t she angry with him for forcing the telepath on her? Lastly, came a thought she didn’t want the HP to read. Why did she still want spend days in bed with the demon?

His true identity didn’t matter. Danger shrouded him like a regal mantle.

And ruthlessness was her catnip.

CHAPTER4

She’d been telling the truth though also holding back. Of that, West had no doubt. Yet, he wouldn’t have the HP rip into her thoughts again. West’s instinct said to trust her, or he’d lose something valuable in the process.

Gah.Since when did he suddenly start handing out trust like Halloween candy? Faraday and West’s own instinct said she truly despised those who got away with breaking the clan’s laws concerning violations to humans or human paranormals. Perhaps his trust was not misguided.

“Please release her.”

Kaiya stepped to the bed’s side and murmured words alien to him. A ball of energy formed in one of the mage’s hands. She clapped them together and the ball turned to fine sparkles which fell across Karen.

She didn’t move. Instead, her eyes narrowed slightly, like she didn’t trust him completely. Wise. Even though he wanted to shove his employees out of the room and explore his attraction to this vampire, if he had any inkling she’d betray him, he’d kill her. Too many depended on him.
