I turn around to find Asena moving away from me looking scared and for the briefest of seconds the soft, vulnerable woman I knew appears.

“It’s what I tried to tell you. I’m bringing some heat.”

“Some heat? Woman, you’ve brought war to my doorstep.”

Over my shoulder, I see another ghost from my past storm inside. Silver eyes, black hair swooped off a face with high cheekbones, and a set of Desert Eagles that match mine.

A cruel grin tips my lips.

Patrons push and fight for the nearest exit. A night of drinking and fun quickly turns into hell.

The Druid emerges from the chaos and we lock eyes simultaneously. Beside me, Asena drops to the floor and clutches my leg.

“We have to go, please, Hark. Help me.”

Millions of questions get shoved aside at the fear in her voice. A pissed-off Asena I can handle. An annoyed Asena is just as fun to push to the ledge. But a scared Asena breaks my heart in two and sends me right back to the night and the sound of her voice screaming my name as I took what I thought would be my last breath.

I pull my girls from their holsters and the second I see the Druid crest the second-floor landing I send two slugs in his direction. I turn to face him, putting more of my body between him and Asena when she stumbles to her feet.

Off goes another spray of bullets. They don’t hit their mark but they chip away at the cement column he’s using as cover. I go to reduce the space between us, but Asena fists handfuls of my cut and tugs.

“Are you crazy?” Eyes wild with fear meet mine when I chance a bullet in the back of my head to look over my shoulder at her.

She pulls me in the opposite direction I want to be going.

This isn’t working.

I walk backward, pushing her toward the far side of the club as I keep the Druid pinned in place. For how long is anyone’s guess.

“What the fuck is he doing here, Asena? Talk fast.” Fires of revenge grip the wrath I’ve buried deep inside me. The firmly closed box turns to ash and there’s no putting it back together.

I push her further behind me and toward the nearest exit.

“My back office. Through there. Get that damn dress moving or we’re eating lead tonight.” I bark orders over the music someone needs to kill.

Patches tackle the Druid but he doesn’t stay down for long. He’s not alone either. Sprays of bullets send thousands of dollars of glass lining the upstairs walls to the floor in a thousand glittering fragments.

I duck, taking Asena with me. What feels like a stiff punch to my left shoulder sends me stumbling forward. Familiar pain blooms screaming at me to move my slow ass faster.

Death moves over me. Only this time it won’t be mine. With a full mag, I aim and don’t stop pulling the trigger until I hear the deafening sound of an empty chamber click.

Hello my old fucking friend. I crack my neck and love the release of tension from my shoulders. I can feel the old wound on my chest throb with memories, but there’s nothing I can do about that but live with it.

It’s tricky with a fucked-up shoulder but I reload and step from behind the overturned table I pushed us behind.

“Answer me, damn it, woman!” I yell back at Asena who wisely doesn’t have the same death wish I do.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

I pop off rounds and feel endless depths of satisfaction in my dark soul when I see one nick the Druid’s thigh.

“Run, you fucker,” I bellow and move to advance.

“God, Hark, you’re going to get yourself killed before I have a chance to do it myself.”

My cut is yanked again and when I turn to find Asena standing, I lose my shit. Me playing chicken with an armed psychopath is one thing, but Heaven will have to be raging with Hell’s fires before I let her put an inch of her life at risk.

I hurl us behind my office door and push her toward the opposite side and a private elevator that opens into a private garage three floors below us. I’ll have to leave this fight for another day. Ares’ advice to let revenge die turns to dust and in its wake a rebirth shakes its new wings free to soar. Fuck yeah.
