I hear Hark take several deep breaths. “Ok, listen,” he starts tightly. “I’ll kill you myself when you are safe at the compound. For now, stay alive and get here.”

“That doesnotsound promising, Hark.”

“I imagine you are on the backroads. Stay there. The boys will meet you halfway. Drive fast, drive safe, and keep your head down.”

“What? Hell no! I am not bringing this to your home? Or asking anyone to put themselves in danger.”

“Then why did you call me?”

Good fucking question.

“Come to me. Bring them our way and we will be ready. This is what we do. End of story.”

“I can’t.” I grip the wheel and barrel around a curve to find nothing but more wet pavement and the open road.

“Yes, you can, baby. How far out are you?” My father’s mansion is only twenty minutes away from Savage land. Another knife to the heart I don’t want to think about. Hark being so close this whole time. Bastard.

“Ten minutes.”

“Shit. There won’t be enough time to reach you before you’re here. Okay, baby. Keep it steady and punch it.”

Fuck him using sweet talk on me.

“No,” I say like I have all the options in the world.

“Or I come to find you and we take the fight to the streets where innocent people can get killed. Either way, I’m not letting you face this fucker alone.”

“You told me to leave.”

“I was stupid and weak.”

I have nothing to say to the contrary.

“Get here as fast as you can without getting killed. We’ll talk about you going back there alone once I give you a permanent divorce and the Druid’s corpse is plant food.”

I hear shuffling over the earpiece. Metal grinds against metal like a gun being cocked. Hark mumbles something to someone before coming back on with me.

“The gate is open. Don’t stop until you see the white of my eyes at the door. You feel me?”

“Ok. But this time put a fucking bulletproof vest on or something. We are about to rewrite the ending to this shit show and you don’t get to die.”

Dragon

Dying is not an option.

While on the phone my brothers must have sensed something off. Rage and Riot are the first in the kitchen and on my ass as I move through the house to the front of the stairs.

Ares comes up from the basement just as I hit the panic button to the stairs. Six slabs of carpeted wood lift on hydraulics to reveal a fraction of the artillery we have hidden inside the walls and other compartments.

“What’s going on?”

“Asena is coming in hot. She has men on her ass. You guys already know about the Druid and our past. It seems he’s back for round three.”

I check the mags in my Desert Eagles and put a few more backup clips in my pockets. “You don’t wanna put your life on the line for someone you don’t know, I understand. But I don’t recommend you be unarmed either way. I know as the club’s sergeant at arms it’s my job to keep the peace, but it looks like we might have to fight to get it.”

“We can handle a fight, and you’re not alone. Brothers mean just that.” Ares puts a hand on my shoulder. “When this is over, we need to talk.”
