His laugh is diabolical and chilling. “Nyet, you fool. I’ll raise her as the child you stole from me. It’s the very least you can do.”

I surge to my feet and fight the white dots and blurred vision threatening to take me down.

Just beyond my vision shadows shift through the rolling steam of the sauna and from the gray folds steps my worst nightmare.

I look at Doc through the haze of my sight. Make that mysecondworst nightmare. Because while I fear Sean, I at least know what he wants and I can give it to him without sacrificing my life. But Doc won’t settle until it’s my blood he has on his hands.

“Good, I’m glad the cat is finally out of the bag. I see you’ve started taking your payment.”

Sean walks forward, his white teeth bared in malice. I glare at him. He grins back like a real sadistic son-of-a-bitch.

“Did you cover the part where she’s mine and you get the kid?” Sean comes to stand over me and I’m trapped. One direction is a two-foot-thick wall and the other is the lap pool. And directly in front of me are two men firmly standing in derange-ville.

There’s nowhere for me to go. The cries of my child tug at the invisible strings only a mother can feel. If I go to her, I’ll bring death with me. Frustration, agony, betrayal, and gut-wrenching fear swing my eyes toward the sauna.

I look at Doc pleading for the humanity in him to surface, but the demons in him have full control. The man I met was nothing but a farce anyway.

“You won’t get far. Dragon will hunt you down and he won’t stop.” Once the words are out, I feel the weight of why Doc wanted me to tell Dragon he had a little girl. He wanted both of us to feel the agony of losing our child, not just me.

Dragon

Ino longer care about the atrocities committed against me. They all prepared for this minute. Right here, right now. My hard interior matches my tough exterior and I’m ready.

The death I nearly suffered. The abuse at my father’s hand. The blood, the loss. The never-ending pain.

Every single instant of suffering during my thirty-eight years on this rock honed me for saving my baby girl. My miracle.

The very angel sitting in the middle of a sauna crying for her momma.

Rage swells the veins in my body and the amount of adrenaline flooding my veins is exactly what I need to step through the back door of the bathhouse and be her protector.

All I can focus on is the little girl with my eyes and her momma’s milky skin and tiny freckles.

Wide scared eyes turn up to me as I ease into the back door.

Fuck me, God, please don’t harm such an angel.

I can only hope and pray He hasn’t abandoned me yet.Give me this one last miracle. Please, God.

Behind me, I ease the hinged door closed and wait to see if anyone rounds steps through the steam.

Seeing no one, I take a step forward and then another. It’s way too damn hot in here for an adult, much less a child.

“Hey, baby girl. It’s okay.” I tuck my guns away in their holsters and slide my hands under tiny little arms. The small dress she has on starts to stick to her body.

“Wanna go find mommy?”

“Yes, pwease. Mommy.” She looks at me with so much trust and I make a silent promise to God to right every fucking wrong I’ve ever done in my life if He’ll grant me one more death. And then I’m done.

Just one.

The Druid’s. For putting this small miracle in so much danger he deserves worse than death. But it doesn’t matter if I’m granted my wish, I’d gladly take the punishment for ridding the world of his vile filth.

“Let’s go, okay?”

Cement splinters and bursts into dust in my face.
