“You seem lost in thought. Everything okay?”

We are all gathered here to celebrate the new Savage blood coming into the family in just a few short months.

“I’m just caught up in the moment and what it means for all of us. The new house, the massive playroom you want to build. Are you sure we need seven rooms?”

“I think we will need at least ten. I was thinking—”

“Can I have your attention please?”

Nova’s sister stands, wine glass in hand, and all eyes are on her. Shiny black hair mingles with red velvet. A combination Harlon, Cassian, and Santi can’t seem to take their eyes off.

They surround Polaris like an unbreakable shield.

To the side, Ares cracks a bottle of champagne.

“We all know how much family means to us. And we all know there is to be a new Antonov in the family. But I want to officially make the announcement to all here tonight. Let’s give cheering applause for my little nephew or niece! Congratulations Nova and Ares! May your perfect little baby know the love of a sister with the heart of a lion as I do.”

I watch a woman dressed in black with eyes so bright the blue in her irises shine like sapphires. She smiles, but it doesn’t touch her eyes. I make a note to ask about her, but my attention moves back to Polaris.

“No drink!”

Riot comes to stand beside us. “Anyone know the chick with the blue eyes?”

“She’s Harlon’s cousin. Works in the family and I want to say she’s an undertaker.”

“She looks sad if you ask me.”

Dragon rubs his hand up and down my back. “Let’s not take on another’s problem just yet, baby.”

I agree, but still. I know what it is to be alone and drowning.

Another cork is popped and I slosh my drink. I’m still a little jumpy at anything that sounds like a gun going off. And apparently, bubbly champagne cork getting popped from neck bottles is eerily similar.

“You okay, baby?”

“Yeah.”

Riot grabs for some napkins but he freezes in the middle of handing them to me.

“Hey, what’s up, man?”

His face turns white as a sheet and I grab his arm. “Riot, what’s wrong?” I go on high alert scanning the club for any signs of anyone with a gun. I don’t know the layout or where the exits are, I realize. Shit.

“It’s nothing…I ugh…I think…” He scrubs at his eyes and the man who never stutters can’t seem to find his words.

Ares comes to join us. Rage is next. Ghost too. “What is wrong? What has you spooked?”

Riot looks shaken to the core.

“Nothing, Prez. Shit. I don’t know for sure. But I think I just saw my dead wife.”

No one says anything as he sits his drink down.

“I…I have to go.”

We watch in baffled silence as our friend follows a raven hair woman into the darkened club.

“Should we go after him?”
