Threading her arms around Ryan’s neck, Sofia kissed his lips, long and soft.

“Here comes the bride, all dressed in white,” they sang together, kissing in between words.

“I feel like the luckiest girl alive,” Sofia said, looking at the water.

“I’m feeling pretty lucky myself. But why do I feel like we didn’t have a whole lot to do with it?”

“You mean, like there wereotherswho were arranging things for us?” she asked.

“Exactly like others. From the start of our first meeting, it’s almost like we weren’t in charge.”

“Oh no, you mean like ghosts…?”

“Exactly like ghosts,” Ryan said, kissing her in return. “Every move I made after I left my begging corner was out of my control, from having poki for lunch instead of Wendy’s, to agreeing to sit at your table, and then answering your questions about my failures honestly. Someone else was definitely in control of all of that.”

“I never knew that, Ryan. So Caroline approved of me?”

“Approved? She probably chose you for me.”

While they held each other and talked, the image of a familiar surfer in the water outside their balcony caught Sofia’s attention. Over Ryan’s shoulder, she watched him catch the crest like a pro, and then, as he neared the edge of the surf, look up directly into Sofia’s eyes, smile at her, and wave one last time.

The End
